Our take

My take on Pepperstone

For a trader in Dublin, Cork or Galway, the useful question about an international broker is not how many licences it lists but which of its companies you actually sign with, because that decides the rules covering your account. With Pepperstone the answer is the European one: Pepperstone EU Limited in Limassol, regulated by CySEC under number 388/20, is the company an EU client contracts with, and Ireland sits inside that perimeter. In practice that means the ESMA rulebook Irish retail traders already recognise, with leverage on forex capped at 1:30, negative balance protection so an account cannot be pushed below zero, and client money in segregated accounts at tier-1 banks. What it does not mean is an Irish authorisation: Pepperstone serves Irish clients cross-border rather than under the Central Bank of Ireland, and that changes the authority supervising the firm behind your account.

Founded in Melbourne in 2010, Pepperstone is built for activity rather than accumulation: 1,200+ instruments across MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5, cTrader and TradingView, spreads from 0.0 pip on the Razor account, fills in around 30 ms, no minimum deposit and a free $50,000 demo that does not expire on cTrader or TradingView. We list it as a recommended partner and our forex specialist in the Ireland ranking, fourth of the eight brokers we cover, with a note on very fast execution and low CFD fees, and its 4.5/5 Trustpilot rating across 4,100+ reviews lines up with our own testing.

“For an Irish client the entity is the answer: Pepperstone EU Limited under CySEC brings the ESMA rulebook, with retail forex leverage capped at 1:30, behind Razor spreads from 0.0 pip. ”

Safety & regulation

Is your money safe?

Two layers matter for an Irish reader here, and they are easy to confuse. The first is who supervises the company you contract with. Pepperstone runs seven regulated entities: Pepperstone Limited in London under the FCA (no. 684312), Pepperstone Group Limited in Melbourne under ASIC (AFSL 414530), Pepperstone EU Limited in Limassol under CySEC (no. 388/20) for EU clients, Pepperstone GmbH in Düsseldorf under BaFin (no. 151148), plus the DFSA in Dubai, the SCB in the Bahamas and the CMA in Kenya. An Irish resident is an EU client, so the Cypriot company is the relevant one, operating into Ireland on an EU passport rather than on an authorisation from the Central Bank of Ireland. That is normal inside the single market, but it is not an Irish licence: if domestic supervision is your first criterion, AvaTrade is the broker in our Ireland comparison authorised by the Central Bank of Ireland, through AVA Trade EU Ltd (ref. C53877). That distinction reaches beyond the name of the regulator, because investor compensation attaches to the entity you contract with rather than to the country you live in: an AvaTrade client contracts with AVA Trade EU Ltd and falls under the Irish Investor Compensation Scheme the ICCL administers, up to EUR 20,000. Ask which scheme covers Pepperstone EU Limited, and get the answer in writing before you fund. The second layer is what that entity owes you, and this is where the EU route earns its keep. Under the ESMA framework, retail leverage on currency pairs stops at 1:30. Leverage on crypto derivatives runs up to 1:2. Negative balance protection means a gap or a volatile session cannot leave you owing more than your balance, and client money sits in separate accounts at tier-1 banks rather than mixed with the firm's own funds. Two factor authentication switches on from the client area in seconds. One practical step at signup: confirm that the company on your onboarding paperwork is the EU entity, since those caps and protections follow the entity rather than the brand.

The Razor account is where the pricing earns its reputation. EUR/USD spreads open at 0.0 pip and run around 0.1 pip on average, with a $3.50 commission per standard lot per side on MetaTrader and TradingView, $7 the round turn, and $3.00 per side on cTrader, executed in around 30 ms with a fill rate above 99.9% and no dealing desk in between. The Standard account drops the commission for spreads from 1 pip, which fits the trader who places a handful of orders a month; from our testing the Razor account starts paying for itself from around three to five lots a month on the majors, so run the arithmetic on the pairs you trade rather than on the headline spread. Opening carries no thresholds either way: there is no minimum deposit ($200 is a comfortable start), a floor only XTB and IG match in our Ireland comparison, where Bitpanda starts at $10, Vantage at $50, and AvaTrade, Eightcap and Libertex at $100. Deposits are free, nothing is charged for sitting idle, and withdrawals clear within one business day by card, bank transfer or PayPal.

Then there is the currency question, which Irish readers should settle before funding. Pepperstone quotes its pricing in dollars, so every figure above is a dollar figure while your bank account runs in euro. Ten account base currencies are on offer, and funding in the one your account runs in is what keeps conversion out of the picture, so settle at onboarding which currency that will be and match it to the account you pay in from. Ask before you open, because a base currency is easier to set than to change. Pepperstone charges nothing on deposits itself, so any conversion left is your own bank's.

Tax is the other half of the net-return picture, and Ireland taxes assets you own on one set of rules and fund products on another. Our Irish capital gains calculator applies the statutory treatment for individuals: 33% CGT above the annual personal exemption of EUR 1,270, which cannot be transferred to a spouse or carried forward, with losses deducted before the exemption. Irish and other EU UCITS funds and ETFs sit outside that regime, under exit tax at 41% with no exemption and a deemed disposal every eight years, and crypto held as an investment is inside CGT at 33%. All three describe assets you own, and everything here is a derivative, so none of those regimes applies to a position taken on this account. Leveraged derivatives are outside what our calculator models, which makes them a question for Revenue or a qualified adviser. Two statutory dates hold either way: payment falls due by 15 December for disposals up to 30 November, and by 31 January for December disposals. The return itself is filed separately on Form CG1 or within your Form 11, and your broker statements are the evidence. This is not tax advice.

There are 1,200+ instruments to work with, all of them derivatives. Count 25+ indices, among them the FTSE 100, the DAX 40, the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq 100, with the DAX 40 from 0.9 pt and the S&P 500 from 0.4 pt on the Razor account. Around them sit 100+ currency pairs, with EUR/USD from 0.0 pip, GBP/USD from 0.2 pip and USD/JPY from 0.1 pip. Add hundreds of US, European and Australian share derivatives such as Tesla, Apple, Nvidia and Microsoft, around thirty commodities from gold at 0.1 pip through to oil, natural gas and coffee, 100+ ETFs, roughly twenty crypto pairs and a few government bond futures.

One distinction is worth spelling out for an Irish investor, because the two things are named alike and taxed nothing alike. The 100+ ETFs here are derivatives on ETFs, not units of a fund: you never hold the ETF, so there is nothing to place inside the exit-tax regime our Irish calculator describes for EU UCITS funds. If your plan is to own real shares and ETFs for years, XTB in our Ireland comparison offers 0% commission on real stocks and ETFs. Income works the same way: hold a long position through the ex-dividend date and the dividend arrives as a position adjustment, not as a dividend paid to you.

The verdict

The verdict

For an Irish trader the case for Pepperstone is a narrow one, and strong within its lane. The Razor grid from 0.0 pip keeps the cost of trading currencies low, fills come back in around 30 ms with a rate above 99.9%, you choose between MT4, MT5, cTrader and TradingView, and few brokers give you this much room to run orders on autopilot. The EU entity under CySEC brings the framework Irish retail traders already know, with the 1:30 leverage cap, negative balance protection and money segregated at tier-1 banks, and there is no minimum deposit, no inactivity fee and a free $50,000 demo to test it all first. The limits are just as clear. Everything here is a derivative, so the investor who wants to own shares or ETFs outright should look at XTB and its 0% commission on real stocks and ETFs instead. Pepperstone is not authorised by the Central Bank of Ireland either, and if domestic supervision decides it then AvaTrade, authorised through AvaTrade EU, is the alternative in our Ireland comparison; if cost alone decides it, Eightcap ranks first there as one of its lowest-cost brokers. And leveraged trading carries a high risk of losing money whatever the licence behind it. Pepperstone sits fourth of eight in our Ireland ranking as a recommended partner and our forex specialist pick, rated 4.5/5 on Trustpilot across 4,100+ reviews: for an Irish resident who puts execution and automation first and accepts the cross-border EU route, the account holds up.

Frequently asked questions

FAQ Pepperstone

Is Pepperstone reliable?

Yes. Irish clients are served by Pepperstone EU Limited (Limassol, CySEC no. 388/20), inside a group of seven regulated companies including the FCA (no. 684312), ASIC (AFSL 414530) and BaFin (no. 151148). Client money sits in segregated accounts at tier-1 banks and negative balance protection applies under the ESMA framework. Note that this is EU passporting, not a Central Bank of Ireland authorisation, which AvaTrade holds through AvaTrade EU. Trustpilot shows 4.5/5 across 4,100+ reviews.

Why choose Pepperstone?

For execution and automation under EU rules: Razor spreads from 0.0 pip on EUR/USD, fills in around 30 ms with a rate above 99.9%, a choice of MT4, MT5, cTrader and TradingView, and Expert Advisors, cTrader Automate, Capitalise.ai and a free VPS. Through the EU entity you also get the framework Irish retail traders know, with forex leverage capped at 1:30 and negative balance protection.

What are the fees at Pepperstone?

Razor account: spreads from 0 pip with $3.50 per lot per side ($7 round turn, $3.00 on cTrader). Standard: spreads from 1 pip, commission-free. No minimum deposit, no deposit, inactivity or withdrawal fees. Pricing is quoted in dollars while your bank account runs in euro, and ten account base currencies are on offer, so settle at onboarding which one your account runs in and match it to the account you fund from. On tax, our Irish calculator covers assets you own (33% CGT above the EUR 1,270 exemption on shares and crypto, exit tax at 41% on EU UCITS funds); leveraged derivatives are a question for Revenue or an adviser.

Who is Pepperstone for?

The trader rather than the investor. Beginners can open with no minimum deposit and learn on the free $50,000 demo, active traders get fills in around 30 ms with a rate above 99.9% across four platforms, and algorithmic traders get the automation stack. An Irish resident who wants to own shares or ETFs for years should look elsewhere: XTB in our Ireland comparison offers 0% commission on real stocks and ETFs.

Is it easy to withdraw from Pepperstone?

Yes, withdrawals are free and processed within one business day by card, bank transfer or PayPal. Pricing is quoted in dollars while your bank account runs in euro, and moving money in or out of a currency other than the one your account runs in goes through a conversion each way. Ten account base currencies are on offer, so settle at onboarding which one your account will run in: Pepperstone charges nothing on deposits or withdrawals itself, so any conversion left is your own bank's.
