Our take

My take on Avatrade

For an Irish investor, AvaTrade stands apart for a plain reason: this is a Dublin business. Founded in 2006 in Ireland, the group's European arm is AVA Trade EU Ltd, authorised by the Central Bank of Ireland. Most brokers on our Ireland comparison reach Irish clients from an entity established somewhere else: Cyprus for Pepperstone, Eightcap and Libertex, Germany for IG, Austria for Bitpanda, an EU-authorised group entity for XTB that your onboarding paperwork names, and an international licence for Vantage, each of them legitimate but supervised outside Ireland. Here the regulator on your account-opening documents is the domestic one, and so is the compensation scheme behind it.

Under that authorisation sits a broad multi-asset derivatives offer: more than 400,000 clients, 1,250+ instruments, and a choice between the in-house apps (AvaTradeGO, WebTrader, AvaOptions) and MetaTrader 4 and 5. Pricing runs on fixed rather than variable spreads, 0.9 pip on EUR/USD on the Standard account with no separate commission, so an order's cost is known before it is placed. We rank AvaTrade second in our Ireland comparison as the beginner-friendly option, and the Irish authorisation is part of why. Trustpilot shows 4.8 out of 5 across more than 12,500 reviews. The trade-off to weigh from the start is that everything here is a derivative: the account is built for trading rather than for holding assets over decades.

“For an Irish client the entity line reads unusually: AVA Trade EU Ltd is a Dublin firm authorised by the Central Bank of Ireland, with the ICCL compensation scheme up to EUR 20,000 behind it. ”

Safety & regulation

Is your money safe?

Start with the entity, because for an Irish reader it is the whole point. AVA Trade EU Ltd is based in Dublin and authorised by the Central Bank of Ireland under reference C53877, and it is this company that covers the European Union under the MiFID passport. That inverts the usual arrangement: where most international brokers reach Irish clients from an entity abroad, an Irish client of AvaTrade contracts with a domestically supervised firm, and the passport runs outward from Dublin rather than inward to it. Around it sit Ava Capital Markets Australia Pty Ltd (ASIC, AFSL no. 406684), Ava Trade Japan K.K. (Japanese FSA, no. 1662), Ava Capital Markets Pty Ltd (FSCA, no. 45984) and Ava Trade Middle East Ltd (ADGM, no. 190018). Two consequences matter for an account opened from Ireland. First, client money sits in segregated bank accounts, and clients of the EU entity fall under the Irish Investor Compensation Scheme, administered by the ICCL, up to EUR 20,000, which covers firm failure rather than a losing trade. Second, the ESMA rulebook applies to you in full as a retail client: leverage capped at 1:30 on forex and 1:2 on crypto derivatives, negative balance protection so a position cannot take the account below zero, and asset segregation. The AvaTradeGO app logs in biometrically. Whatever the licence, read which entity is named on your account-opening documents: the protections that apply to you follow that entity and nothing else.

Indicative estimates, normal conditions. Actual costs vary by asset and volatility.

The dealing price is the same for everyone: fixed rather than variable spreads that do not widen when volatility does, 0.9 pip on EUR/USD on the Standard account with no separate commission and 0.6 pip on the Professional account for eligible clients, share derivatives at 0.13% of the order amount folded into the spread, and free deposits and withdrawals inside one to two business days. What is specific to funding from Ireland is everything that sits around that price.

Now the currency, which an Irish client should settle first. AvaTrade quotes its minimum deposit, its demo balance and its dollar-pair spreads in US dollars, while your salary and bank account are in euro. Our fee comparison puts conversion on non-base funding at roughly 0.5%, against about 1% across the market: modest, but real, and it applies to every movement in and out. Ask at onboarding which base currency your account will run in and match it to the account you fund from, so a round trip does not cross conversion twice. The other line to watch is the inactivity fee, around USD 50 per quarter after three months without a login. Pulling the other way, our Ireland comparison credits AvaTrade with 3% interest on uninvested balances, which is worth having on cash left sitting between positions.

Tax is the other half of the net-return picture, and Ireland treats wrappers very differently. Our Ireland capital gains calculator sets out the regimes an individual meets: shares held directly and crypto held as an investment fall within capital gains tax at 33% above the annual personal exemption of EUR 1,270, which is per person and cannot be transferred or carried forward, while Irish and other EU UCITS funds and ETFs sit outside CGT entirely, under exit tax at 41% with no exemption and a deemed disposal every eight years. Nothing on AvaTrade is a direct holding, so neither panel describes a derivative position, and the treatment of your trading gains is a question for Revenue or a qualified adviser. The calendar applies either way: disposals up to 30 November are paid by 15 December and December disposals by 31 January, while the return is filed separately, on Form CG1 or within a Form 11. Keep the annual statement. This is not tax advice.

One word governs all 1,250+ lines of the catalogue: derivatives. The breadth is real, 50+ forex pairs, 600+ US and European share derivatives, 30+ indices, around 60 ETFs, 30 commodities, government bonds and roughly 20 cryptocurrencies, none of it conferring ownership, plus the piece you rarely see elsewhere, FX options on 40+ currency pairs through AvaOptions with a strategy builder and payoff visualisation, which lets a hedging book and a spot book live in one account.

Two consequences follow for a euro-based reader. First, that ETF line is not what an Irish investor usually means by ETFs: these are derivative exposures to funds, not units you own, so the exit-tax wrapper set out in our capital gains calculator is not the one you are in, but neither do you hold anything for twenty years. If direct ownership is the goal, XTB in our Ireland comparison is the account built for it, at 0% commission up to USD 100,000 of stock and ETF trades a month and 0.2% (minimum USD 10) beyond. Second, AvaProtect: you pay a premium known in advance to shield a position against losses for a window you choose, and are reimbursed if the market moves against you inside it. Alongside the demo, the AvaAcademy library and copy trading it makes a reasonable first leveraged account, provided the leverage is respected: 1:30 means the margin is 3.3% of the position, so a 3% move against a fully used position takes almost all of it.

Who this broker is for

Who this broker is for

  1. Irish beginner who wants a home-supervised account

The contracting entity is a Dublin company supervised at home, with clients of that EU entity covered by the Irish Investor Compensation Scheme. Add the free USD 100,000 demo, the AvaAcademy courses, predictable fixed spreads and AvaProtect on early positions, and this is a measured place to learn what leverage does.

  2. Euro-based trader who wants predictable costs

Fixed spreads across 1,250+ instruments, 0.9 pip on EUR/USD with no separate commission and 0.6 pip on the Professional account for eligible clients, plus free deposits and withdrawals inside one to two business days. Settle the account base currency at onboarding, since conversion on non-base funding runs at about 0.5% and every euro transfer crosses it.

  3. Hedger or algorithmic trader

FX options on 40+ pairs through AvaOptions with a payoff builder, MT5 with the MQL5 API for automated strategies, and depth of market, under retail caps of 1:30 on forex and 1:2 on crypto derivatives. The Professional account, open to eligible clients, tightens the grid to 0.6 pip on EUR/USD, and eligibility is assessed by AVA Trade EU Ltd, the Dublin entity you contract with.

The verdict

The verdict

AvaTrade earns its second place in our Ireland comparison on two grounds that pull in the same direction. The first is regulatory proximity: the contracting entity is a Dublin firm supervised at home, clients of that EU entity fall under the Irish Investor Compensation Scheme, and the full ESMA retail package applies: 1:30 on forex, negative balance protection and segregated funds. For anyone who reads the entity line before wiring money, having supervisor and compensation scheme both onshore is a straightforward argument. The second is the way in: fixed spreads at 0.9 pip on EUR/USD keep costs predictable, and the free USD 100,000 demo, the AvaAcademy courses, AvaProtect and copy trading make the first months less unforgiving. The limits are just as plain. Everything is a derivative, so an Irish investor who wants to own shares or ETFs outright should look at a securities account instead, XTB being the option in our comparison built for that. Pricing is quoted in US dollars against your euro income, with conversion at roughly 0.5% on non-base funding. And if trading cost matters more than the regulatory address, Eightcap ranks first in our Ireland comparison, with its Raw account from 0.0 pip on EUR/USD plus USD 3.5 per standard lot, under an EU entity in Cyprus. Trustpilot sits at 4.8 out of 5 across more than 12,500 reviews. Leveraged derivatives carry a high risk of capital loss whatever the licence: a home regulator changes who supervises the firm, not the risk of the position.

Frequently asked questions

FAQ Avatrade

Is Avatrade reliable?

Yes. The entity an Irish client contracts with is AVA Trade EU Ltd, a Dublin company authorised by the Central Bank of Ireland, and clients of that EU entity fall under the Irish Investor Compensation Scheme. The group has been regulated since 2006 across nine jurisdictions, including ASIC in Australia (AFSL no. 406684), the Japanese FSA (no. 1662) and the FSCA in South Africa (no. 45984). Client money sits in segregated bank accounts, and Trustpilot shows 4.8 out of 5 across more than 12,500 reviews. Leveraged derivatives still carry a high risk of capital loss.

Why choose Avatrade?

For an Irish client the distinguishing feature is regulatory proximity: the European entity is Irish and supervised in Dublin rather than passporting in from another member state, with the ICCL scheme behind it. On top of that sit fixed spreads known upfront, 1,250+ instruments, FX options on 40+ pairs via AvaOptions, copy trading and the AvaAcademy library. We rank it second in our Ireland comparison, as the beginner-friendly option.

What are the fees at Avatrade?

There is no separate commission. Pricing runs through fixed spreads, from 0.9 pip on EUR/USD on the Standard account and 0.6 pip on the Professional account for eligible clients, with share derivatives from 0.13% of the order amount built into the spread. Deposits and withdrawals are free. Two costs are specific to funding from Ireland: conversion on non-base funding at roughly 0.5%, since pricing is in US dollars while you hold euro, and an inactivity fee of around USD 50 per quarter after three months without a login.

Who is Avatrade for?

It leans towards the beginner: the free USD 100,000 demo, guided onboarding, the AvaAcademy courses, fixed spreads and AvaProtect all soften the learning curve, and ESMA caps retail leverage at 1:30 on forex whichever profile you are. Experienced traders get MT4 and MT5, automated strategies through the MQL5 API and FX options on 40+ pairs. It does not suit the buy-and-hold investor who wants to own shares or ETFs directly, since everything here is a derivative: neither of the two Irish regimes our capital gains calculator sets out, 33% CGT on directly held shares and 41% exit tax on Irish and EU UCITS funds, describes what you hold on this account.

Is it easy to withdraw from Avatrade?

Yes, withdrawals are free by bank transfer, card or e-wallet and are processed within one to two business days. Since pricing is quoted in US dollars and your bank account is in euro, check which base currency your account runs in, as conversion on non-base funding costs around 0.5%. On tax, our Ireland capital gains calculator applies 33% above the EUR 1,270 annual personal exemption on shares and crypto held as investments; the payment windows are 15 December for disposals up to 30 November and 31 January for December disposals, and the return is filed separately on Form CG1 or within a Form 11. This is not tax advice.
