The Irish investor who wants stocks, ETFs, crypto and metals in one app, from $10

Our take

My take on Bitpanda

Ireland is an EU market, and that single fact decides most of what Bitpanda is for an investor here. The platform runs out of Vienna, where Eric Demuth, Paul Klanschek and Christian Trummer founded it in 2014, and it reaches Irish clients by passporting its European licences rather than under an authorisation issued in Dublin. Two things follow, and they are worth weighing together rather than separately: an EU-authorised platform on one side, and on the other no Irish regulator standing behind the entity you contract with. Pricing on securities is a flat one euro (around $1.20) per order, whatever the size.

What sits behind a single login is unusually broad. Around 8,000 cash stocks and 2,500 ETFs, whole or fractional, more than 600 cryptocurrencies in real custody, four physical precious metals in Swiss vaults, in-house crypto indices and automated savings plans, all unlocking from a $10 deposit with a first purchase as small as $1. Bitpanda sits sixth of eight in our Ireland comparison, listed as a partner rated 4.6 out of 5, flagged as the pick for crypto and described as an intuitive multi-asset platform with thousands of assets in one app. Trustpilot shows 4.0/5 across more than 15,000 reviews.

The part no platform can simplify is Irish tax, and with a menu this wide it is worth settling first, because the split runs straight through the account. Shares held directly and crypto sit inside capital gains tax at 33% above the annual exemption of EUR 1,270. Irish and EU UCITS funds and ETFs sit outside it, in the 41% exit-tax regime: two sleeves of one account, two very different outcomes for the same return.

“Passported into Ireland under EU MiCA licences: one euro per order on stocks and ETFs, from a $10 deposit, with the Irish tax regime, not the fee, deciding your net return. ”

Safety & regulation

Is your money safe?

Bitpanda GmbH operates from Vienna under the MiCA authorisation Austria's FMA granted on 9 April 2025, and it is the passporting of that licence across the European Union that lets it serve a client in Ireland. The group had already taken one of Europe's first MiCA licences from Germany's BaFin in January 2025, with a further authorisation from Malta's MFSA. Stocks and ETFs run through a separate company, Bitpanda Financial Services GmbH, an investment firm the FMA licenses under MiFID II, the European rulebook for investment services across the Union. Your assets stay walled off from the company's own: crypto in real custody, mostly in cold storage and withdrawable to your own wallet, the four precious metals fully insured in LBMA-accredited Swiss vaults with legal ownership staying yours, and cash in separate bank accounts. Two-factor authentication switches on for any account in a few seconds. One point to be plain about, because it is the honest limit of the arrangement: firms operating in Ireland are supervised by the Central Bank of Ireland, and Bitpanda holds no Irish authorisation, reaching you as a passported EU firm instead. If a home-regulator entity is what you want, AvaTrade is the broker in our Ireland comparison that has one, through AVA Trade EU Ltd in Dublin (Central Bank of Ireland, ref. C53877). Spot investing also removes a category of questions here: with no margin and no short selling, there is no leverage cap to check and no negative balance protection to rely on.

Pricing on securities is about as plain as it gets. One euro (around $1.20) per order across some 10,000 stocks and ETFs, whatever you invest, and that is the whole bill: no custody fees, no account-keeping fees, nothing on deposits or withdrawals. SEPA deposits cost $0, bank withdrawals are free from $10, and savings plans carry no service charge.

The flat structure has a shape worth reading before you set a schedule. That $1.20 on a $100 buy is 1.2% of what you invested; the same $1.20 on $500 is 0.24%, on $1,000 it is 0.12%. Larger, less frequent purchases dilute it and small weekly ones concentrate it, so cadence moves your all-in cost more than the fee itself. Crypto works differently: the premium is baked into the price you see, from 0.99% on Bitcoin and up to 1.49% on most large caps, so nothing has to be reverse-engineered later, though community feedback is consistent that those premiums run higher than an order book at large volumes. Set against XTB, which advertises 0% commission on stocks and ETFs up to $100,000 a month (then 0.2%, minimum $10) and charges 0.5% on currency conversion, the flat fee is the more predictable of the two and the gap between them turns on your order size rather than on either headline.

Then comes the cost that dwarfs both, which is Revenue's share. Shares held directly and crypto fall inside Irish CGT at 33% above the annual personal exemption of EUR 1,270. ETFs change the arithmetic entirely: Irish and other EU UCITS funds fall under exit tax at 41% with no exemption, and the eight-year deemed disposal can make tax fall due while you still hold the units. Bitpanda's tax-ready exports are raw material for that filing, not a substitute, and none of this is tax advice.

The menu behind one login is wider than most European apps put in front of a retail investor. Around 8,000 stocks and 2,500 ETFs in cash form, whole or fractional, more than 600 cryptocurrencies in real custody, and four physical precious metals in insured, LBMA-accredited Swiss vaults. The in-house crypto indices buy the top 5, 10 or 25 of the market in one tap and rebalance on their own, savings plans run from $10 on a daily to monthly cadence, staking pays weekly on 50+ coins and restakes automatically, and the Bitpanda Card settles spending from whichever asset you pick.

For an Irish investor the useful exercise is mapping that menu onto the two tax regimes, because they cut straight through it. The stock and crypto sleeves sit inside CGT at 33% above the EUR 1,270 exemption. The ETF sleeve does not: an Irish or EU UCITS tracker is taxed under exit tax at 41% with no exemption and an eight-year deemed disposal, so check the domicile of each fund before you automate a plan on it. The equity and fund names here are global ones, Apple, Microsoft, Tesla and Nvidia alongside MSCI World, S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 trackers, and if you do buy Irish shares the stamp duty paid on purchase forms part of your cost base.

Three features deserve a second look for the same reason. Staking rewards are generally income when received under the Irish treatment, with the later sale a separate CGT event, so a weekly auto-restaked stream is a stream of records to keep. The auto-rebalancing indices need the same thought: a swap between two coins is a disposal in Ireland, not a neutral event, and the index does that for you. The Visa card, settling from crypto or metals as easily as from cash, raises the same question. Check the treatment with Revenue or a qualified adviser before leaning on any of the three.

The verdict

The verdict

For an Irish investor Bitpanda does something few European platforms manage: cash stocks and ETFs at a flat one-euro order fee, 600+ cryptocurrencies in real custody, physical metals and automated savings plans in one app, with $10 opening the account and a first purchase possible at $1. The regulatory footing is serious, with MiCA licences from the FMA and BaFin passported into Ireland and a MiFID II firm behind the securities. Where it stops is equally clear: spot investing only, no margin, no short selling, and no Central Bank of Ireland authorisation, which matters to some Irish investors and not at all to others.

Two comparisons are worth making first. For a long-term portfolio of real stocks and ETFs and nothing else, XTB advertises 0% commission up to $100,000 a month, though it charges 0.5% on currency conversion, so the choice turns on your order size. If you want the entity you contract with to answer to your own regulator, AvaTrade holds a Central Bank of Ireland authorisation through AVA Trade EU Ltd in Dublin. What Bitpanda offers that neither matches is breadth in one place, and our Ireland comparison ranks it sixth of eight while flagging it as the pick for crypto. Settle the tax question before the platform question: the 33% CGT regime and the 41% exit-tax regime will shape your net return more than any fee here. This is not tax advice.

Frequently asked questions

FAQ Bitpanda

Is Bitpanda reliable?

Yes. Bitpanda GmbH is MiCA-licensed by Austria's FMA (9 April 2025) and Germany's BaFin (January 2025), with a further MFSA authorisation, and it reaches Irish clients by passporting those licences; securities go through Bitpanda Financial Services GmbH, an FMA-licensed MiFID II investment firm. Client assets are segregated and crypto sits in real custody, mostly in cold storage. It holds no Central Bank of Ireland authorisation: in our Ireland comparison, AvaTrade is the broker with an Irish-authorised entity. Trustpilot shows 4.0/5 across 15,000+ reviews.

Why choose Bitpanda?

For breadth in one account: some 10,000 stocks and ETFs at a flat one-euro order fee, 600+ cryptocurrencies in real custody, four physical metals, auto-rebalanced crypto indices and savings plans from $10, with free SEPA deposits. Our Ireland comparison rates it 4.6 out of 5 and flags it as the pick for crypto.

What are the fees at Bitpanda?

One euro (around $1.20) per order on stocks and ETFs whatever the size, no custody fees, free SEPA deposits, free bank withdrawals from $10 and no service charge on savings plans. On crypto the premium sits inside the displayed price, from 0.99% on Bitcoin. The larger cost for an Irish investor is tax: 33% CGT above the EUR 1,270 exemption on shares and crypto, 41% exit tax with no exemption on Irish and EU UCITS funds. Not tax advice.

Who is Bitpanda for?

The investor rather than the trader. You start from $10, buy fractional shares from $1, add crypto and metals, and automate it in minutes. There is no margin and no short selling, so a leveraged strategy has no place here, and anyone wanting a counterparty authorised by the Central Bank of Ireland should compare with AvaTrade.

Is it easy to withdraw from Bitpanda?

Yes. Bank withdrawals are free with a $10 minimum and crypto can go to your own wallet at any time, at network cost. SEPA deposits are free too. Support answers 24/7 by chat and WhatsApp.
