Avatrade vs Pepperstone: which one to choose (2026)?
Our synthesis
The verdict of the duel
Pepperstone or AvaTrade? For an Irish resident the choice narrows to two questions: which company signs your account, and whether you would rather pay a price fixed in advance or a raw spread plus a commission. Neither is a securities account, so no position on either confers a share, an ETF unit or a coin, and both owe Irish retail clients the ESMA protections, forex leverage stopping at 1:30, negative balance protection and client money kept apart from the firm's own. On the paperwork, AvaTrade is the unusual one. Its European company, AVA Trade EU Ltd, is authorised in Dublin by the Central Bank of Ireland under reference C53877 and passports outward from there, and clients of that entity are covered by the Irish Investor Compensation Scheme, capped at EUR 20,000. Pepperstone arrives the ordinary way, from Pepperstone EU Limited in Limassol on a CySEC licence (no. 388/20) passported into Ireland, which brings those same ESMA protections under a Cypriot supervisor; the scheme standing behind that company is worth getting in writing before you fund. Crypto derivatives are capped at 1:2 on both sides, a limit AvaTrade sets out as the ESMA retail cap. The bill is where Pepperstone answers back. Its Razor account quotes EUR/USD from 0.0 pip and charges USD 3.50 per standard lot per side, USD 3.00 on cTrader, with no minimum deposit and no inactivity fee; from our testing that structure overtakes the commission-free Standard grid from 1 pip somewhere around three to five lots a month on the majors, so the arithmetic follows how often you trade. AvaTrade prices the other way round: 0.9 pip fixed on EUR/USD on the Standard account, 0.6 pip on the Professional account for eligible clients, no separate commission and no widening when a session turns volatile, in exchange for a USD 100 entry, around USD 50 a quarter once three months pass without a login, and roughly 0.5% conversion whenever you fund outside your base currency. Pepperstone counters with ten account base currencies and nothing charged on conversion by the broker itself; 3% interest on uninvested balances sits on AvaTrade's side of the sheet. Tax separates neither. The two regimes our Ireland calculator models both assume you own the asset: capital gains tax at 33% once the EUR 1,270 personal exemption is used, and the separate 41% exit-tax wrapper that Irish and EU UCITS funds and ETFs fall into. A leveraged account sits outside both, which makes trading gains a question for Revenue or a qualified adviser. AvaTrade carries the higher overall score of the two, 4.8 against 4.3, which is why it heads this page, and the guided start and an Irish regulator on the account-opening documents are much of what earns it. Our lean is narrower than the score, scoped to trading cost and execution, and on that scope Pepperstone is the account we would open.
you would rather know the cost of an order before you place it and see an Irish regulator on your account-opening documents: fixed spreads that hold their width when the market moves, AvaProtect to insure an early position for a premium set in advance, FX options on 40+ pairs through AvaOptions the day hedging matters as much as trading, AvaSocial and DupliTrade to follow someone while you find your feet, and a free USD 100,000 demo alongside the AvaAcademy courses before any live money.
you already trade actively and want the tooling wrapped around the price: MT4, MT5, cTrader and TradingView side by side, Expert Advisors, cTrader Automate, Capitalise.ai and a free VPS to run orders unattended, fills in around 30 ms with a rate above 99.9%, a USD 50,000 demo that never expires on cTrader or TradingView, 24/7 support, and free withdrawals processed within one business day.

Frequently asked questions
Your questions about Avatrade and Pepperstone
Is Avatrade reliable?
Yes. The entity an Irish client contracts with is AVA Trade EU Ltd, a Dublin company authorised by the Central Bank of Ireland, and clients of that EU entity fall under the Irish Investor Compensation Scheme. The group has been regulated since 2006 across nine jurisdictions, including ASIC in Australia (AFSL no. 406684), the Japanese FSA (no. 1662) and the FSCA in South Africa (no. 45984). Client money sits in segregated bank accounts, and Trustpilot shows 4.8 out of 5 across more than 12,500 reviews. Leveraged derivatives still carry a high risk of capital loss.
Why choose Avatrade?
For an Irish client the distinguishing feature is regulatory proximity: the European entity is Irish and supervised in Dublin rather than passporting in from another member state, with the ICCL scheme behind it. On top of that sit fixed spreads known upfront, 1,250+ instruments, FX options on 40+ pairs via AvaOptions, copy trading and the AvaAcademy library. We rank it second in our Ireland comparison, as the beginner-friendly option.
What are the fees at Avatrade?
There is no separate commission. Pricing runs through fixed spreads, from 0.9 pip on EUR/USD on the Standard account and 0.6 pip on the Professional account for eligible clients, with share derivatives from 0.13% of the order amount built into the spread. Deposits and withdrawals are free. Two costs are specific to funding from Ireland: conversion on non-base funding at roughly 0.5%, since pricing is in US dollars while you hold euro, and an inactivity fee of around USD 50 per quarter after three months without a login.
Who is Avatrade for?
It leans towards the beginner: the free USD 100,000 demo, guided onboarding, the AvaAcademy courses, fixed spreads and AvaProtect all soften the learning curve, and ESMA caps retail leverage at 1:30 on forex whichever profile you are. Experienced traders get MT4 and MT5, automated strategies through the MQL5 API and FX options on 40+ pairs. It does not suit the buy-and-hold investor who wants to own shares or ETFs directly, since everything here is a derivative: neither of the two Irish regimes our capital gains calculator sets out, 33% CGT on directly held shares and 41% exit tax on Irish and EU UCITS funds, describes what you hold on this account.
Is it easy to withdraw from Avatrade?
Yes, withdrawals are free by bank transfer, card or e-wallet and are processed within one to two business days. Since pricing is quoted in US dollars and your bank account is in euro, check which base currency your account runs in, as conversion on non-base funding costs around 0.5%. On tax, our Ireland capital gains calculator applies 33% above the EUR 1,270 annual personal exemption on shares and crypto held as investments; the payment windows are 15 December for disposals up to 30 November and 31 January for December disposals, and the return is filed separately on Form CG1 or within a Form 11. This is not tax advice.
Is Pepperstone reliable?
Yes. Irish clients are served by Pepperstone EU Limited (Limassol, CySEC no. 388/20), inside a group of seven regulated companies including the FCA (no. 684312), ASIC (AFSL 414530) and BaFin (no. 151148). Client money sits in segregated accounts at tier-1 banks and negative balance protection applies under the ESMA framework. Note that this is EU passporting, not a Central Bank of Ireland authorisation, which AvaTrade holds through AvaTrade EU. Trustpilot shows 4.5/5 across 4,100+ reviews.
Why choose Pepperstone?
For execution and automation under EU rules: Razor spreads from 0.0 pip on EUR/USD, fills in around 30 ms with a rate above 99.9%, a choice of MT4, MT5, cTrader and TradingView, and Expert Advisors, cTrader Automate, Capitalise.ai and a free VPS. Through the EU entity you also get the framework Irish retail traders know, with forex leverage capped at 1:30 and negative balance protection.
What are the fees at Pepperstone?
Razor account: spreads from 0 pip with $3.50 per lot per side ($7 round turn, $3.00 on cTrader). Standard: spreads from 1 pip, commission-free. No minimum deposit, no deposit, inactivity or withdrawal fees. Pricing is quoted in dollars while your bank account runs in euro, and ten account base currencies are on offer, so settle at onboarding which one your account runs in and match it to the account you fund from. On tax, our Irish calculator covers assets you own (33% CGT above the EUR 1,270 exemption on shares and crypto, exit tax at 41% on EU UCITS funds); leveraged derivatives are a question for Revenue or an adviser.
Who is Pepperstone for?
The trader rather than the investor. Beginners can open with no minimum deposit and learn on the free $50,000 demo, active traders get fills in around 30 ms with a rate above 99.9% across four platforms, and algorithmic traders get the automation stack. An Irish resident who wants to own shares or ETFs for years should look elsewhere: XTB in our Ireland comparison offers 0% commission on real stocks and ETFs.
Is it easy to withdraw from Pepperstone?
Yes, withdrawals are free and processed within one business day by card, bank transfer or PayPal. Pricing is quoted in dollars while your bank account runs in euro, and moving money in or out of a currency other than the one your account runs in goes through a conversion each way. Ten account base currencies are on offer, so settle at onboarding which one your account will run in: Pepperstone charges nothing on deposits or withdrawals itself, so any conversion left is your own bank's.
