Our take

My take on Pepperstone

Pepperstone is the broker that tops our South Africa comparator, and it earns that position on execution rather than on paperwork. Founded in Melbourne in 2010, it is a forex specialist first: Razor accounts start from 0.0 pips, orders fill in around 30 ms with a rate above 99.9%, and there is no minimum deposit, so you size the account to your own risk rather than to a broker's threshold. For a South African who scalps the majors or trades the news on gold, that is why it sits at number one.

The point to be clear about before you fund is regulatory. Pepperstone holds no FSP licence from the FSCA under the FAIS Act. It serves South African residents through its international entities, supervised by the FCA in the United Kingdom, ASIC in Australia, BaFin, CySEC, the CMA and the SCB, with client money held in segregated accounts at tier-1 banks. That is genuine tier-1 oversight, but it is not a local licence: on our own South Africa ranking, Avatrade is FSCA-authorised through Ava Capital Markets (Pty) Ltd and Vantage is FSCA-regulated, so if a locally supervised entity is your first filter, those two answer it and Pepperstone does not. Accounts here are usually funded in US dollars while you earn in rand. On Trustpilot the rating sits at 4.5/5 across more than 4,100 reviews, which matches what our own testing found.

“Rank 1 in our South Africa comparator on execution and cost, but served from international entities rather than a local FSCA licence: Razor spreads from 0.0 pips, no FSP under the FAIS Act. ”

Safety & regulation

Is your money safe?

South Africa's market conduct regulator is the Financial Sector Conduct Authority, which licenses brokers as Financial Services Providers under the FAIS Act. Pepperstone is not one of them: there is no FSCA FSP licence behind the account you would open and no local deposit guarantee attached to it, and the broker serves South African residents from its international entities. What sits behind those is substantial: Pepperstone Limited in London under the FCA (no. 684312), Pepperstone Group Limited in Melbourne under ASIC (AFSL 414530), Pepperstone EU Limited in Limassol under CySEC (no. 388/20), Pepperstone GmbH in Düsseldorf under BaFin (no. 151148), plus the DFSA in Dubai, the SCB in the Bahamas and the CMA in Kenya, seven regulated companies in all. The regulators cited for South African clients are the FCA, ASIC, BaFin, CySEC, the CMA and the SCB. Client money sits in segregated accounts at tier-1 banks, as each of those regulators demands. That is context rather than a warning: Eightcap under CySEC, the FCA, ASIC and the SCB, and Libertex under CySEC with an EU passport serve South Africans the same way. What separates them locally is that Avatrade and Vantage hold FSCA authorisations while Pepperstone does not, and IG runs a South African entity in Johannesburg. Two practical consequences follow. Protections such as leverage caps and negative balance protection are set by the entity your account is opened with rather than by any South African rule, so the 1:30 retail forex cap you may read about comes from the ESMA framework covering the EU entities; check your onboarding paperwork before you wire anything. And if something goes wrong, the complaint route runs through that foreign regulator rather than the FSCA, which is the real trade-off you accept in exchange for the pricing.

Operating entityPepperstone runs a group of seven regulated companies (FCA, ASIC, CySEC, BaFin, DFSA, SCB, CMA). South African residents are served by one of those international companies, supervised by the FCA, ASIC, BaFin, CySEC, the CMA or the SCB. The entity you contract with is confirmed at onboarding and is not a South Africa-licensed company

The Razor account is where Pepperstone makes its case in South Africa, and the qualification matters as much as the pricing: on Razor the commission stacks on top of the spread, so compare the all-in cost on the pairs you actually trade rather than the 0.0 pip figure on its own. From our testing Razor becomes worthwhile from around 3 to 5 lots a month on the majors, and below that the Standard account, commission-free from 1 pip, is the simpler pick. Around the trade there is nothing to pay: no minimum deposit ($200 is a comfortable start), free deposits, no inactivity fee, free withdrawals within one business day. That $0 entry is the lowest on our South Africa list alongside IG.

The rand side is where a South African cost picture diverges from the headline grid. Accounts here are usually funded in US dollars, so that dollar pricing is what you will see debited, and the ZAR floats freely against the dollar rather than sitting on a peg. The rate can move between the day you fund and the day you withdraw, in your favour or against it, which makes it a real component of your return. Pepperstone charges nothing on deposits, so the cost to price before you commit is whatever your rand bank takes to send and convert. Ten base currencies are on offer, and keeping USD matches the account to your funding route.

Tax is the other half, and South Africa is a long way from a zero-tax market. SARS runs two regimes, and a derivatives account usually falls under the harsher one: because CFD and forex trading is speculative and often frequent, it usually treats the profits as revenue and taxes them as ordinary income at your marginal rate, up to 45%, rather than under the capital gains regime, and losses may be deductible the same way. The investor route, for assets held long term, is gentler: an annual exclusion of R40,000, then 40% of the remaining net gain included in your taxable income at your marginal rate, an effective maximum of about 18%. Nothing here is a long-term holding, so plan on the income treatment. This is not tax advice; consult a registered SARS tax practitioner.

Instruments & markets covered

Every one of the 1,200+ instruments here is a derivative, and the currency book is what makes the broker popular with South African forex traders in the first place: 100+ pairs across majors, minors and exotics, EUR/USD from 0.0 pip on Razor. Gold, indices, ETFs and crypto pairs fill out the rest.

Two gaps matter locally. The share derivatives are US, European and Australian names such as Tesla, Apple, Nvidia and Microsoft, so there are no JSE-listed South African shares to trade here, and none of it confers ownership of the underlying in any case. To own real shares, ETFs or metals outright rather than trade a contract on them, IG charges no ETF fees across a much wider universe and Bitpanda covers crypto, stocks, ETFs and metals from a $10 entry. Pepperstone is a trading account, not a portfolio.

Automation is the technical argument for the account. Expert Advisors run on MT4 and MT5, cTrader Automate takes C#, Capitalise.ai lets you write rules in plain English without code, and a free VPS keeps strategies running overnight. Copy trading runs through cTrader Copy, built into cTrader, plus the DupliTrade and Myfxbook AutoTrade integrations rather than an in-house social network: on our South Africa copy-trading comparison it sits behind Avatrade and Vantage, both of which pair copy trading with a local FSCA authorisation. All of it can be rehearsed on the free $50,000 demo before a single rand leaves your bank account.

Who this broker is for

Who this broker is for

  1. Active or algorithmic forex and gold trader in South Africa

The strongest fit and the reason Pepperstone ranks first here. Razor spreads from 0.0 pip on EUR/USD and 0.1 pip on gold, $3.50 per lot per side ($3.00 on cTrader), execution around 30 ms above a 99.9% fill rate, and full automation through Expert Advisors on MT4 and MT5, cTrader Automate in C#, Capitalise.ai and a free VPS. Razor becomes worthwhile from 3 to 5 lots a month on the majors.

  2. Beginner in South Africa

Workable but not the obvious first stop. No minimum deposit against $50 at Vantage, $100 at Eightcap and Avatrade or ZAR 2,000 at Libertex, a free $50,000 demo that does not expire on cTrader and TradingView, and 24/7 support. If you would rather learn under a locally licensed broker with a structured academy, Avatrade is FSCA-authorised through Ava Capital Markets (Pty) Ltd. Leveraged trading carries a high risk of loss.

  3. South African who wants a locally licensed FSCA entity

Not served on this point. Pepperstone holds no FSP licence under the FAIS Act and serves residents from its international entities, so any complaint runs through the foreign regulator. Avatrade and Vantage hold FSCA authorisations, and IG runs a South African entity with a Johannesburg presence.

  4. Long-term investor building a portfolio

Wrong tool. Everything here is a derivative, there is no securities account, and the share derivatives are US, European and Australian names rather than JSE listings. IG charges no ETF fees across a wider universe, and Bitpanda covers crypto, stocks, ETFs and metals from a $10 entry.

The verdict

The verdict

Pepperstone tops our South Africa ranking because it is the best execution account on the list. Razor spreads from 0.0 pips and 0.1 pip on gold, $3.50 per lot per side, fills in around 30 ms above a 99.9% rate, four platforms including cTrader and TradingView, no minimum deposit and the most complete automation stack in its class: for a South African who trades often and prices a round turn to the pip, it is our top technical pick. Three things need weighing against that. Pepperstone holds no FSP licence from the FSCA under the FAIS Act, so if a locally supervised entity is your priority, Avatrade is FSCA-authorised through Ava Capital Markets (Pty) Ltd and Vantage is FSCA-regulated. And the cost discipline does not compound the way it would in a tax-free market: SARS usually treats active trading profits as revenue at your marginal rate, up to 45%, so the tax line will often outweigh the spread line. Weigh the structural limits too: derivatives only, no JSE-listed shares and no ownership of the underlying, on leveraged products that carry a high risk of loss, with most retail accounts losing money. The obvious cross-check on cost is Eightcap, one of the lowest-cost brokers in our South Africa comparison, though our own round-turn estimate still puts Razor ahead of it. For the South African who wants execution quality first and accepts international rather than local supervision to get it, this is the account we would open.

Frequently asked questions

FAQ Pepperstone

Is Pepperstone reliable?

Pepperstone is a tier-1 regulated broker, but it holds no FSP licence from the FSCA under the FAIS Act. It serves South African residents through its international entities, supervised by the FCA (no. 684312), ASIC (AFSL 414530), BaFin (no. 151148), CySEC (no. 388/20), the CMA and the SCB, with client money segregated at tier-1 banks and 2FA on the client area. Trustpilot shows 4.5/5 across more than 4,100 reviews. If a locally licensed entity matters to you, Avatrade (Ava Capital Markets (Pty) Ltd) and Vantage hold FSCA authorisations.

Why choose Pepperstone?

For execution and cost, which is why it ranks first in our South Africa comparison: Razor spreads from 0.0 pips and 0.1 pip on gold, $3.50 per lot per side, fills in around 30 ms above a 99.9% rate, no minimum deposit, and full order automation through Expert Advisors, cTrader Automate, Capitalise.ai and a free VPS.

What are the fees at Pepperstone?

Razor: spreads from 0 pip with $3.50 per lot per side ($7 round turn, $3.00 on cTrader). Standard: from 1 pip, commission-free. No minimum deposit and no deposit, inactivity or withdrawal fees. Add two local costs yourself: the conversion your rand bank charges, since accounts are usually funded in US dollars, and tax, as SARS usually treats active trading profits as revenue taxed at your marginal rate, up to 45%. This is not tax advice; consult a registered SARS tax practitioner.

Who is Pepperstone for?

The South African who trades often and prices a round turn to the pip, and who is comfortable with international rather than local supervision. Less suited to anyone who wants an FSCA-licensed entity, JSE-listed shares, or direct ownership of shares and ETFs, since everything here is a derivative.

Is it easy to withdraw from Pepperstone?

Yes, withdrawals are free and processed within one business day by card, bank transfer or PayPal. Accounts are usually funded in US dollars and the rand floats freely against the dollar, so the rate can move between funding and withdrawal and your own bank may charge to convert. Pepperstone adds nothing on deposits and offers ten base currencies.
