Nexo: crypto platform with daily interest, a crypto-backed credit line and a payment card, available to South African residents? My 2026 review
A crypto platform with daily interest, crypto-backed loans and a payment card, available to South African residents but held in custody, with no local licence.
Our take
My take on Nexo
Founded in 2018 by Antoni Trenchev, Kosta Kantchev and Kalin Metodiev, Nexo is built around a three-part offer: buy and hold cryptocurrencies, put them to work through daily interest, and use them as collateral for a credit line without having to sell them. A crypto payment card with cashback rounds out the ecosystem. The group operates from London and Sofia, with several entities registered as virtual asset service providers (VASP) across Europe.
Nexo is available to South African residents and accounts are typically denominated in US dollars; the South African rand (ZAR) floats freely against the dollar, so a currency conversion may apply. It is a custodial platform: Nexo holds client crypto assets on their behalf, so you do not control your own private keys. It does not hold an FSP licence from the FSCA under the FAIS Act and serves the market as an international platform.

Safety & regulation
Is your money safe?
Nexo has no South Africa-licensed entity. The group operates through several entities registered as virtual asset service providers (VASP) in the European Union, including a registration with the FSMA in Belgium, and highlights a SOC 2 Type II security certification. This framework provides real oversight at European level, but it is not an FSP licence from the FSCA under the FAIS Act, and crypto assets held on Nexo are not covered by any deposit guarantee scheme. The model is custodial: the platform holds client crypto assets, mostly in cold storage, with two-factor authentication available.

Fees & spreads
What does it really cost?
Nexo's pricing is based on a spread built into the displayed price rather than a separately listed commission, on the purchase, sale and exchange of cryptocurrencies. Deposits in cryptocurrencies and by bank transfer are free. Withdrawals include a number of free operations each month depending on the client's loyalty tier, beyond which the blockchain network fee specific to each asset applies.
This mechanism rewards regular users and holders of the NEXO token, but the absence of a separately listed commission makes it harder to compare directly with a broker that charges a fixed, visible fee. For an investor who wants to know the exact cost of each operation before confirming it, a transparent flat commission is easier to read.
| Account | Min. deposit | Spread from | Commission |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard account Opened from the mobile app or the web, identity verification required. | No minimum stated on most cryptocurrencies | — | Cost built into the spread, no fixed commission shown |

Instruments & markets covered
The catalogue covers a broad range of cryptocurrencies, from reference assets such as Bitcoin and Ethereum to a selection of stablecoins and altcoins. Nexo offers daily interest on several deposited assets, a credit line backed by the crypto assets held with no obligation to sell them, and a crypto payment card with cashback.
There is, on the other hand, no traditional securities account: Nexo remains a pure crypto platform, designed to hold, grow and spend crypto assets rather than to build a portfolio of listed shares.

Who this broker is for
Who this broker is for
-
Crypto holder looking to grow assets without selling them
Good fit: daily interest, a credit line backed by crypto assets, and a payment card with cashback.
-
Investor who wants a locally regulated FSCA entity
Less well served: no FSCA-licensed entity and no deposit guarantee on crypto. An FSCA-licensed partner is better positioned on this point.

The verdict
Nexo ticks a specific box: a complete offer to hold crypto, grow it through daily interest and mobilise it as loan collateral, rounded out by a payment card. That is a real argument for anyone who wants a crypto ecosystem built into daily life, and it is available to South African residents with accounts usually denominated in US dollars. In South Africa, investment and crypto gains are taxable: the South African Revenue Service (SARS) includes 40% of an individual's net capital gain in taxable income at the marginal rate (an effective maximum of around 18%), after an annual exclusion of R40,000, while active traders may be taxed on their gains as ordinary income. This is not tax advice; consult a registered SARS tax practitioner. Keep in mind the trade-offs: no FSCA licence, no deposit guarantee, a custodial model in which the platform holds your keys, and cryptocurrencies that stay highly volatile. Use only what you can afford to lose in full.

Frequently asked questions
FAQ Nexo
Is Nexo reliable?
Nexo does not hold an FSP licence from the FSCA under the FAIS Act. It operates through several entities registered as virtual asset service providers (VASP) in Europe, including a registration with the FSMA in Belgium, and holds a SOC 2 Type II security certification. It is available to South African residents as an international platform. The model is custodial: Nexo holds client crypto assets.
Why choose Nexo?
For its daily interest on several deposited cryptocurrencies, its credit line backed by crypto assets with no obligation to sell them, and its payment card with cashback. It is a complete offer for anyone who wants to grow and spend crypto without liquidating it, and it is available to South African residents with accounts usually denominated in US dollars.
What are the fees at Nexo?
No separately listed commission is charged: the cost is built into the spread on each buy, sell or exchange. Deposits in cryptocurrencies and by bank transfer are free, and a number of free withdrawals is granted each month depending on the loyalty tier; beyond that the blockchain network fees apply.
Who is Nexo for?
The South African resident who wants broad access to cryptocurrencies that earn daily interest and a credit line backed by their assets, without having to sell them. Less suited to someone who wants a locally regulated FSCA entity or a non-custodial wallet, better covered by an FSCA-licensed partner or a platform with published proof of reserves.
Is it easy to withdraw from Nexo?
Yes, crypto withdrawals go to an external wallet, free within the monthly limit tied to the loyalty tier and then subject to the blockchain network fee. Fiat withdrawals are made by bank transfer. Accounts are typically denominated in US dollars, and the South African rand floats against the dollar, so a currency conversion may apply.
