Bitpanda: multi-asset app from $10: crypto, stocks, ETFs and physical metals? My 2026 review
The Vienna multi-asset app that lets a South African investor start from $10 across crypto, stocks, ETFs and physical metals, served from Europe rather than under an FSCA licence.
The South African who wants to own crypto, international ETFs and physical gold in one app, starting from $10
Our take
My take on Bitpanda
For a South African investor, Bitpanda answers a narrower question than the brokers above it in our comparison. It is not a CFD account: it is a cash investing app where you own what you buy. It sits fifth of the seven brokers in our South Africa ranking, rated 4.6, where it carries our Crypto badge as an intuitive multi-asset platform holding thousands of assets in one app; our dedicated South Africa crypto and staking comparisons put Nexo first. Founded in Vienna in 2014, it now serves more than 7 million customers, almost all European.
The part that travels well here is the entry point. A $10 deposit opens the account and a first purchase can be $1: you do not need to convert a large rand sum to find out whether the platform suits you, and recurring savings plans start at $10 with no service charge. Our South Africa comparator also lists around 2.25% interest on uninvested balances.
The trade-off is regulatory. Bitpanda holds no FSP licence from the FSCA under the FAIS Act; it reaches South African residents from its European entities, while AvaTrade (Ava Capital Markets (Pty) Ltd) and Vantage hold local FSCA authorisations on our South Africa list. That is the line to weigh against everything it does well.
“A cash multi-asset app you can open with $10 from South Africa, with real ownership of what you buy. The trade-off is that it holds no FSCA licence and cannot host a TFSA, so your recourse is European and the rand conversion is on you. ”

Safety & regulation
Is your money safe?
South Africa has a clear framework for this, which makes Bitpanda's status easy to state. Financial services are supervised by the FSCA under the FAIS Act, and since the FSCA declared crypto assets a "financial product" in October 2022, a Crypto Asset Service Provider needs an FSP licence to be regulated locally. Bitpanda does not hold one. It serves South African residents from Europe, under its European licences: MiCA from Austria's FMA and Germany's BaFin, an MFSA authorisation in Malta, and MiFID II for the securities entity. That is real oversight, and the EU MiCAR framework is what our South Africa comparator points to, but it is not an FSCA licence: your counterparty and your recourse are European, and no South African guarantee scheme covers the account. What softens that is the ownership itself, unusually concrete for a crypto-first platform: your coins can be withdrawn to a wallet you control and the metals are held in your name in Switzerland, so what you buy is not simply a claim on the platform. You are trusting a European regulator rather than your own, in exchange for genuine ownership of what you buy.

Fees & spreads
What does it really cost?
Its cost against the average of the brokers we track (shorter bar = cheaper).
Bitpanda's own tariff is short: a flat one euro (around $1.20) an order across some 10,000 shares and ETFs, nothing for custody, account-keeping or deposits, bank withdrawals free from $10, no service charge on savings plans, and a premium built into the crypto price you see, from 0.99% on Bitcoin. None of that is where a South African investor's money actually goes.
The rand leg is. Bitpanda is a euro-zone platform whose tariff is set in euros, and our South Africa comparators note that broker accounts serving this market are usually funded in US dollars, so the currency your money lands in follows how you fund the account. Either way you convert out of rand, which floats freely, so there is no stable rate to plan around: on a monthly recurring buy held for years that quiet conversion line can outweigh the $1.20 order fee several times over. Price two things before you commit: what your own bank charges on the cross-border transfer, since Bitpanda charges nothing on deposits, and how often you intend to fund. Fewer, larger transfers beat many small ones on both counts at once, and the $10 minimum lets you test the full round trip for a trivial amount.
Tax is the other half of the bill, and South Africa does tax investment returns. SARS applies capital gains tax to disposals held as investments: you deduct the annual exclusion of R40,000, then 40% of the remaining net gain is included in your taxable income at your marginal rate, up to 45%, capping the effective CGT rate at roughly 18%. One wrinkle is product-specific: staking rewards are generally treated by SARS as income when received, with CGT due on later disposal. The other applies to any platform: if SARS regards you as an active trader rather than an investor, profits can be taxed as ordinary income at 100% inclusion. Nothing is withheld at source, so the platform's tax-ready exports are what you need at filing time. This is not tax advice; consult a registered SARS tax practitioner.

Read the catalogue as an offshore sleeve and it makes sense for a South African portfolio. There are about 8,000 stocks and 2,500 ETFs in cash form, whole or fractional, and the fractional part matters most here: a rand budget can buy a set amount each month into a world index tracker without waiting for the price of a full unit, which is why our South Africa ETF comparison ranks Bitpanda second behind IG. What you own is the real fund, not a leveraged CFD on its price, the distinction to hold on to when comparing it with AvaTrade or Vantage. The names we document are international, so treat this as diversification away from the JSE rather than a route into JSE-listed local shares.
On crypto the offer is deeper than most multi-asset apps: 600+ coins in real custody you can pull out to your own wallet, the in-house BCI indices for anyone who would rather buy the market than pick coins, and staking on more than 50 coins. Two caveats belong on a South African page: staking here is custodial while your coins are committed, and rewards are never guaranteed, so a reward can be dwarfed by a fall in the coin price. Our South Africa staking comparison places Bitpanda behind Nexo and Uphold, precisely because this is staking bundled into a general-purpose app rather than a dedicated yield platform.
The physical metals matter more here than they would in a European review. Gold, silver, platinum and palladium in insured, LBMA-accredited Swiss vaults, with legal ownership staying yours, is a hard-asset allocation outside the rand, and platinum and palladium are metals a South African reader knows from the domestic mining sector. All four asset classes can be bought on a savings plan from $10, the single most useful feature here for anyone investing a fixed rand amount each month.

Who this broker is for
Who this broker is for
-
South African beginner starting with a small monthly amount
The best fit here. A $10 deposit opens the account, a first buy can be $1, and fractional shares and ETFs let a fixed rand amount go in every month whatever the unit price, with savings plans that carry no service charge. Fund in fewer, larger transfers to keep the bank's cross-border charge and the flat order fee under control.
-
Offshore diversification away from the rand
Real ownership of about 10,000 international stocks and ETFs, 600+ cryptocurrencies withdrawable to your own wallet, and four physical metals in insured Swiss vaults, in one account. Treat it as the offshore sleeve alongside a JSE-facing route and a TFSA, since neither is available here.
-
Investor who wants a locally regulated provider
Less well served: no FSP licence from the FSCA under the FAIS Act, so escalation runs through a European regulator. AvaTrade (Ava Capital Markets (Pty) Ltd) and Vantage hold FSCA authorisations in our South Africa comparison, and IG runs a Johannesburg presence.

The verdict
The verdict
Bitpanda occupies a specific slot in our South Africa comparison, and not the one the brokers above it fill. Pepperstone, Eightcap, AvaTrade and Vantage are leveraged trading accounts; Bitpanda is a cash investing app where you own the asset, which is why it sits fifth on the hub yet second in our South Africa ETF ranking. For a South African who wants one place to hold a world ETF tracker, some Bitcoin in real custody and a slice of physical gold, starting with a few hundred rand rather than a lump sum, the $10 entry, fractional buys and free savings plans make the habit easy to start. Three limits decide it. There is no FSP licence from the FSCA under the FAIS Act, so your recourse is European, and IG tops our ETF ranking with no ETF fees if that weighs more. There is no Tax-Free Savings Account, so the R36,000 a year and R500,000 lifetime allowance cannot be used here. And the rand conversion is the cost the headline fees hide, since the ZAR floats, on top of the tax the fees section sets out. Within those limits it is the most complete cash multi-asset platform on our South African list, and crypto stays highly volatile: invest only what you can afford to lose in full.

Frequently asked questions
FAQ Bitpanda
Is Bitpanda reliable?
Bitpanda does not hold an FSP licence from the FSCA under the FAIS Act, so it is not regulated in South Africa. It serves residents from Europe: Bitpanda GmbH in Vienna is MiCA-licensed by Austria's FMA (April 2025) and by BaFin (January 2025), with a further authorisation from Malta's MFSA, and securities run through Bitpanda Financial Services GmbH under MiFID II. Client assets are segregated and crypto sits in real custody, mostly in cold storage, but there is no local guarantee scheme and no South African regulator to escalate to.
Why choose Bitpanda?
For one account holding what a South African portfolio usually needs offshore: around 10,000 international stocks and ETFs in real ownership at a flat one-euro (about $1.20) order fee, 600+ cryptocurrencies withdrawable to your own wallet, and four physical metals in insured Swiss vaults. It is second behind IG in our South Africa ETF ranking thanks to fractional real ETFs.
What are the fees at Bitpanda?
A flat one euro (around $1.20) per order on stocks and ETFs whatever the size, no custody fees, and a premium included in the displayed crypto price from 0.99% on Bitcoin. Deposits are free and bank withdrawals free from $10. From South Africa, add two costs the headline rates leave out: your bank's cross-border transfer charge, and the conversion out of rand, since the rand floats. Fewer, larger deposits reduce both at once.
Who is Bitpanda for?
The South African who wants to invest rather than trade, starting small: $10 opens the account, a first buy can be $1, fractional shares and ETFs suit a fixed monthly rand amount, and everything is genuinely owned rather than a CFD. It works less well as a single solution: no TFSA wrapper, no JSE-listed local shares in the catalogue we document, and no FSCA licence, so anyone wanting local recourse should look at AvaTrade or Vantage.
Is it easy to withdraw from Bitpanda?
Yes. Bank withdrawals are free from $10 and crypto can be sent to a wallet you control at network cost. You earn in rand while the tariff is set in euros and accounts serving this market are usually funded in dollars, so a conversion applies in both directions. On tax, SARS includes 40% of a net capital gain in taxable income at your marginal rate (up to 45%) after the annual R40,000 exclusion, staking rewards are generally treated as income when received, and nothing is withheld at source. This is not tax advice; consult a registered SARS tax practitioner.
