Libertex: transparent commission pricing on a wide CFD range? My 2026 review

The one broker in our South Africa comparison quoting its entry threshold in rand, at ZAR 2,000: zero spread on a wide range of instruments with one commission shown before you confirm, served from its Cypriot CySEC entity rather than under an FSCA licence.

Our take

My take on Libertex

Libertex arrives in our South Africa comparison with one detail no other broker on the list shares: its entry threshold is quoted in rand. Our local card puts the minimum deposit at ZAR 2,000, where Pepperstone and IG ask for nothing, Bitpanda for $10, Vantage for $50, and Eightcap and Avatrade for $100. Read the rand figure for what it is, though: everything past that threshold, the commission grid, the demo, the pricing on every instrument, is denominated in US dollars, so a rand-quoted entry point does not make this a rand account.

What Libertex actually sells is legibility. Rather than widening the spread and keeping its margin out of sight, it quotes zero spread on a wide range of instruments and charges one commission per trade, from 0.0% depending on the instrument, printed in the order ticket before you confirm. That matters more here than in a tax-free market, because SARS usually treats leveraged trading profits as revenue and taxes them as ordinary income at your marginal rate: the execution cost is the part you control.

The regulatory framing belongs up front. Libertex holds no FSP licence from the FSCA under the FAIS Act; South African residents are served from Indication Investments Ltd in Limassol, supervised by CySEC under licence 164/12. That puts it alongside Pepperstone, Eightcap and IG rather than Avatrade, FSCA-authorised here through Ava Capital Markets (Pty) Ltd, or Vantage, also FSCA-regulated. It sits at rank 7 of the seven brokers in our South Africa hub, rated 4.4 as a partner broker, described on our card as transparent commission-based pricing on a wide CFD range. That is the lane, and within it the offer is coherent.

“The only broker in our South Africa comparison to quote its entry point in rand, and the one that prints the cost of a trade before you confirm it, which counts where SARS taxes trading profits as income. ”

Safety & regulation

Is your money safe?

In South Africa the Financial Sector Conduct Authority licenses brokers as Financial Services Providers under the FAIS Act, and that licence is what gives a local client a local supervisor to complain to. Libertex does not hold one. You contract with Indication Investments Ltd, a Cypriot investment firm in Limassol regulated by CySEC under licence 164/12, and our South Africa card puts it plainly: regulated by CySEC with an EU passport. That passport is worth understanding rather than taking as reassurance, because it carries the licence across the European Economic Area, not to South Africa. A local client gets the substance of Cypriot supervision without a local route of recourse. That substance is real, but every piece of it reaches a South African client through the Cypriot entity rather than through a South African rulebook: the 1:30 retail forex cap, the negative balance protection, the segregated client money and the Investor Compensation Fund membership all come from the CySEC side of the licence, and the compensation scheme in particular is Cypriot rather than a local deposit guarantee, so confirm your own eligibility at onboarding. If a local licence is a hard requirement, our ranking has two brokers with documented local authorisation, Avatrade through Ava Capital Markets (Pty) Ltd and Vantage, and IG runs a South African entity with a Johannesburg presence. One local clarification on crypto: the FSCA declared crypto assets a financial product under the FAIS Act in October 2022, so a provider holding coins for you needs an FSP licence. Libertex does not hold any, since its crypto exposure is a derivative capped at 1:2 with no wallet and no withdrawal to a blockchain address.

Market averagevariable

Indicative estimates, normal conditions. Actual costs vary by asset and volatility.

Start with the mechanism, because it is what separates this broker locally. Most brokers in our South Africa comparison bury their margin in the spread; Libertex quotes zero spread on a wide range of instruments and bills one commission instead, from 0.0% depending on the instrument, shown before you confirm. Our indicative estimate puts an all-in round-turn lot on the majors at roughly $9, against about $13 for the average of the brokers we track and $8 at Eightcap, rank 2 here and one of the lowest-cost brokers available to South African traders. So Libertex prices below the market average and above the cheapest local option; what it adds is knowing the number before the order goes in.

Then the rand side, and two costs the commission grid does not show. The entry point is quoted in rand, the only such threshold in the comparison, but the account itself runs in dollars, the ZAR floats rather than sitting on a peg, and the rate can move between the day you fund and the day you withdraw. Libertex charges nothing on deposits, so what remains is your bank's transfer charge and any conversion on funding a dollar account from a rand one. The second cost is behavioural: an inactivity fee lands after 180 days without trading activity, so an account funded for a strategy that never starts erodes on its own. Tax is the third variable, and South Africa does tax trading gains. On leveraged derivatives, SARS usually treats CFD and forex profits as revenue, taxed as ordinary income at your marginal rate, up to 45%. The gentler capital gains route applies to assets held as an investment: deduct the annual exclusion of R40,000, include 40% of the remaining net gain in taxable income at your marginal rate, and the effective maximum lands around 18%. That distinction is the practical argument for the Libertex Invest side of the account, where you hold real stocks rather than a derivative. Crypto follows the same logic, and dividends are separate, with local dividends carrying 20% withholding tax and foreign markets often withholding at source. This is not tax advice; consult a registered SARS tax practitioner.

Instruments & markets covered

There are 300+ instruments, and for a South African reader the useful first question is what is missing. No JSE-listed shares, no local index. The equity exposure is US and European names such as Apple, Tesla, Amazon and Microsoft, the 20+ indices are the S&P 500, Nasdaq 100 and DAX 40, and most of the catalogue confers no ownership. If local market exposure or real ownership is the goal, that is a different account: IG carries 17,000+ tradable markets with no ETF fees and a Johannesburg presence, and Bitpanda opens from a $10 entry across crypto, stocks, ETFs and metals. Our South Africa ETF shortlist is IG, Bitpanda, Avatrade and Vantage, and Libertex is not on it.

Inside its own lane the range holds up, class by class in the breakdown that follows. Two gaps matter locally. Crypto is a derivative on the main coins, capped at 1:2, with no wallet, staking or lending; for yield on coins our local staking shortlist is Nexo, Uphold and Bitpanda, and our crypto comparison runs Nexo, Eightcap, Uphold and IG. There is no proprietary copy trading either, which is why Libertex sits outside our South Africa copy-trading selection of Avatrade, Vantage, Pepperstone and Eightcap.

The exception to the derivatives-only rule is Libertex Invest, and locally it is the part worth reading closely: a selection of real stocks at zero brokerage commission, held next to the derivatives in the same app, which means the SARS capital gains treatment can apply to that side of the account rather than the ordinary-income treatment leveraged trading usually attracts. Confirm at onboarding that it is enabled on your profile, since availability follows the entity you contract with. Whichever side of the account you use, rehearse it on the free demo first: on a leveraged product funded from a rand bank account, that is the sensible order of operations.

Who this broker is for

Who this broker is for

  1. South African trader who wants to audit every cost

The core fit. Zero spread on a wide range with one commission from 0.0% shown in the order ticket, free deposits and quick withdrawals. With SARS usually taxing CFD and forex profits as ordinary income at up to 45%, the visible cost is the variable you manage. Watch the 180-day inactivity fee if you trade in bursts.

  2. Resident who wants a locally licensed broker

Not the fit: no FSP licence from the FSCA under the FAIS Act, service from the Cypriot CySEC entity, an EU passport covering the European Economic Area rather than South Africa, and a Cypriot compensation scheme rather than a local guarantee. Avatrade (through Ava Capital Markets (Pty) Ltd) and Vantage are the two brokers in our South Africa ranking with documented local authorisation.

  3. Investor who wants to hold rather than trade

Partly served. Libertex Invest allows a selection of real stocks at $0 brokerage, which can fall under the SARS capital gains route rather than ordinary-income treatment, depending on your own trader-versus-investor position. The catalogue holds no JSE-listed shares and no ETFs in real ownership, so IG and Bitpanda are the local options for that.

The verdict

The verdict

For a South African trader the case is narrow but real. Libertex does one thing better than most of our local comparison: it tells you what a trade costs before you place it, with zero spread on a wide range of instruments and one commission from 0.0% in the order ticket, at an indicative $9 per round-turn lot on the majors against about $13 for the average broker we track. That legibility is worth more here than in a zero-tax market, because SARS usually taxes CFD and forex profits as ordinary income at your marginal rate, up to 45%, so cost control is the lever you hold. Add the award-winning proprietary platform next to MT4 and MT5, a free demo with $50,000 of virtual capital and no expiry, an entry threshold our card quotes in rand at ZAR 2,000, and the Libertex Invest window that can put a selection of real stocks under the gentler capital gains route, and the offer holds together for a cost-conscious trader. The limits are just as clear: no FSP licence from the FSCA under the FAIS Act, so you contract with the Cypriot entity and its EU passport stops at the European Economic Area; no JSE shares and no local index; support weekdays only with no Johannesburg desk; an inactivity fee after 180 days; and dollar pricing while the rand floats around it. Libertex ranks 7 of seven in our South Africa hub, rated 4.4, and is absent from our local ETF, copy-trading, crypto and staking shortlists, which fairly reflects a broker built for one job. If raw cost is the single priority, check it against Eightcap; if a local supervisor matters more, start with Avatrade or Vantage. Leveraged trading carries a high risk of loss and most retail accounts lose money.

Frequently asked questions

FAQ Libertex

Is Libertex reliable?

Libertex has traded as a group since 1997 with more than 3 million clients, and operates through Indication Investments Ltd, regulated by CySEC under licence 164/12 in Limassol, with segregated client funds, negative balance protection and membership of the Cypriot Investor Compensation Fund. It holds no FSP licence from the FSCA under the FAIS Act and serves South African residents from that Cypriot entity, so there is no local supervisor and no local deposit guarantee. Trustpilot shows 3.9/5 across more than 9,500 reviews. For locally licensed alternatives, Avatrade and Vantage are FSCA-regulated.

Why choose Libertex?

For pricing you can read before you click: zero spread on a wide range of instruments and one commission per trade from 0.0%, shown in the order ticket, which is why our South Africa card calls it transparent commission-based pricing on a wide CFD range. Libertex Invest adds a selection of real stocks at $0 brokerage, alongside an award-winning proprietary platform, MT4 and MT5.

What are the fees at Libertex?

Deposits are free and many instruments trade at 0.0 pip, with the cost carried by one visible commission from 0.0%; indicatively around $9 per round-turn lot on the majors against about $13 for the average broker we track. Three local lines to add: our card quotes the minimum deposit in rand at ZAR 2,000 while the account runs in dollars, so conversion applies as the ZAR floats; an inactivity fee applies after 180 days; and SARS usually taxes CFD and forex profits as ordinary income at up to 45%, with the capital gains route (R40,000 exclusion, 40% inclusion, effective maximum around 18%) applying to assets held as investments.

Who is Libertex for?

The cost-conscious trader who wants every fee visible before the order goes in, and the beginner rehearsing on a free demo with $50,000 of virtual capital and no expiry. Less suited to the resident who requires an FSCA-licensed entity, better served by Avatrade or Vantage, and to the investor who wants JSE-listed shares or ETFs in real ownership, better served by IG or Bitpanda. Libertex is also absent from our local ETF, copy-trading, crypto and staking shortlists.

Is it easy to withdraw from Libertex?

Yes. Requests take a few clicks by card, bank transfer or e-wallet and are processed quickly. The account is denominated in US dollars while you earn and spend in rand, and the ZAR floats freely, so the rate can move between funding and withdrawal; check what your own bank charges, since Libertex adds nothing on deposits.
