Eightcap: best platform for Forex trading, and one of the lowest-cost brokers in our South Africa comparison? My 2026 review
One of the lowest-cost brokers available to South African traders: Raw spreads from 0.0 pip with a $3.5 per-lot commission, MT4, MT5 and native TradingView, serving South African residents under its international CySEC, FCA, ASIC and SCB licences rather than an FSCA one.
The South African trader who wants to control costs down to the pip and accepts international rather than FSCA supervision
Our take
My take on Eightcap
Eightcap sits at rank 2 in our South Africa comparison, rated 4.8 as a partner broker, and the whole review turns on one trade-off. On the Raw account the EUR/USD spread starts at 0.0 pip with a $3.5 commission per standard lot per side, $7 the round turn. What you give up for that price is a local licence: the Melbourne-founded broker holds no FSP authorisation from the FSCA under the FAIS Act and serves South African residents from its CySEC, FCA, ASIC and SCB entities, so there is no local supervisor to take a complaint to. Avatrade, FSCA-authorised here through Ava Capital Markets (Pty) Ltd, and Vantage, also FSCA-regulated, are the two brokers in the ranking where that route exists.
Two local mechanics follow from the same setup. The account runs in US dollars while you earn and spend in rand, and the ZAR floats freely, so conversion is a cost line rather than a rounding error; and everything on offer is a derivative, so there is no JSE-listed share to hold. Platforms are the ones local traders already know, MT4, MT5 and TradingView connected natively, the demo is free for 30 days with $50,000 of virtual capital, and Trustpilot shows 4.0/5 across more than 3,100 reviews. Read the rest of this page as arithmetic: what the pricing grid saves an active trader, against what the missing FSCA licence costs in recourse.
“For the South African trader who measures a broker by the raw cost of a round trip, few names in our comparison get close to Eightcap, provided you accept international rather than FSCA supervision. ”

Safety & regulation
Is your money safe?
The question that decides this review is which company your money reaches. Eightcap holds no FSP licence from the FSCA under the FAIS Act, so a South African client has no local supervisor to complain to; the group serves residents from four supervised entities instead: Eightcap EU in Cyprus under CySEC, Eightcap (UK) Ltd under the FCA (no. 921296), Eightcap Pty Ltd in Melbourne under ASIC (no. 391441) and Eightcap Global Limited in the Bahamas under the SCB, the entity that takes clients outside the EU, the UK and Australia. That last line matters more than the first three for a reader in Johannesburg, because it is where the two numbers that shape a leveraged account are decided. South Africa sets no retail leverage cap of its own, and the SCB entity is outside the ESMA rulebook, so the 1:30 forex ceiling and the automatic negative balance protection that come with the CySEC entity are not what a South African account necessarily gets: the ceiling can be considerably higher and the protection has to be confirmed in writing. Ask which entity your account sits under, and ask for both figures, before you send the first rand. What does hold across the group: client money in segregated accounts at tier-1 banks, and two-factor authentication on every account. For a reader who treats a local licence as non-negotiable, our South Africa ranking has two brokers with documented local authorisation, Avatrade through Ava Capital Markets (Pty) Ltd (plus CySEC, ASIC, the FCA and the FSRA) and Vantage (plus ASIC and the FCA), while IG runs a South African entity with a Johannesburg presence. Crypto sits outside all of this: the FSCA has classed crypto assets as a financial product under the FAIS Act since October 2022 and requires Crypto Asset Service Providers to hold an FSP licence, which Eightcap does not, for the simple reason that it never holds a coin on your behalf. The exposure is a CFD, with no wallet, no custody and no withdrawal to a blockchain address.

Fees & spreads
What does it really cost?
Its cost against the average of the brokers we track (shorter bar = cheaper).
Start with what a South African trader actually pays. Accounts here are funded in US dollars, so the Raw account's dollar grid is what gets debited: EUR/USD from 0.0 pip with a $3.5 commission per standard lot, $7 the round turn, and gold (XAU/USD) from 0.1 pip, the line to watch locally since gold is the classic hedge against a weak rand. Indicatively that is around $8 per round-turn lot against about $13 for the average of the brokers we track, which is why our ranking singles Eightcap out on cost. The Standard account swaps the commission for spreads from 1 pip and suits a handful of orders a month; the crossover sits around 3 to 5 lots. At $100 the minimum deposit is the highest dollar entry ticket in our South Africa comparison, level with Avatrade and above Vantage at $50, Bitpanda at $10 and Pepperstone and IG at $0, while Libertex is the only one quoting its threshold in rand, at ZAR 2,000. Deposits are free, there are no inactivity fees, and withdrawals are free within 24 hours.
Then the rand side, which adds two cost lines a dollar price list does not show. You earn and spend in ZAR while the account runs in dollars, and unlike a pegged currency the rand floats freely, so the ZAR-to-USD rate can move between the day you fund and the day you withdraw. Eightcap charges nothing on deposits, so what is left to check is your bank's transfer charge and any FX conversion on funding a dollar account from another currency, between 0.5% and 1% depending on the method; keeping USD as your base currency avoids paying conversion twice. Tax is the other half, and South Africa does tax trading gains. Because everything here is a leveraged derivative, SARS usually treats CFD and forex profits as revenue, taxed as ordinary income at your marginal rate, up to 45%, rather than under the capital gains regime, where you would deduct the R40,000 annual exclusion and include only 40% of the remaining gain, for an effective maximum of about 18%. That gentler route applies to assets held as an investment, and holding is exactly what this account does not do; crypto follows the same logic, an investor normally taxed under CGT and an active trader on profits as ordinary income. This is not tax advice; consult a registered SARS tax practitioner. With tax taking a share of the upside at your marginal rate, the execution costs you can control matter that much more.

Instruments & markets covered
Instruments & markets covered
There are 800+ instruments and every one is a derivative, so read the catalogue as a trader's toolkit rather than an investor's shelf. For a South African reader the first thing to check is what is missing: no JSE-listed shares, no local equities, no direct ownership. The 600+ share derivatives are US and European names such as Tesla, Apple, LVMH and Microsoft, and because you never hold the underlying there is no vote at the AGM and no dividend as such, only a cash adjustment on long positions held through the ex-dividend date. If you want real ownership rather than derivatives, that is a different account: IG carries 17,000+ tradable markets with ETFs in real ownership and no ETF fees, and Bitpanda offers fractional stocks, ETFs, metals and crypto from a $10 entry. Neither is a JSE route, though: our sources document no coverage of Johannesburg-listed shares at either of them, so confirm local equity access with any broker before you fund.
Within its own lane the range is deep, and two parts of it carry a local angle: gold and silver for anyone hedging a weak rand, and the crypto book our South Africa comparison counts at 400+ crypto CFD markets, held as derivatives. Crypto is capped at 1:2 leverage with no staking, lending or wallet, so if yield on coins is the goal, the staking side of our South Africa comparison (Nexo, Uphold, Bitpanda) is the place to look. Where Eightcap earns its keep is automation and platform choice, without paying a premium for them: Expert Advisors on MT4, the MQL5 API and depth of market on MT5, a free VPS from 5 lots a month, and a native TradingView connection with copy trading through public signals, since there is no proprietary copy service. A swap-free (Islamic) account is available on request after validation, at the pricing of the base account. All of it can be rehearsed on the free 30-day demo, which on a leveraged product is the sensible order of operations.

Cost-first South African trader
Raw spreads from 0.0 pip on EUR/USD with a $3.5 per-lot commission ($7 round turn), 0.1 pip on gold and free withdrawals within 24 hours. The Raw account pays off from 3 to 5 lots a month on the majors, and with SARS usually taxing CFD profits as ordinary income, cost is the variable you control.
-
Resident who wants a locally licensed broker
Not the natural fit: no FSP licence from the FSCA under the FAIS Act, service from the CySEC, FCA, ASIC and SCB entities, and no Johannesburg desk. Avatrade (FSCA-authorised through Ava Capital Markets (Pty) Ltd) and Vantage (FSCA-regulated) are the two brokers in our South Africa ranking with documented local authorisation.
-
Beginner in South Africa
A $100 minimum deposit, a free 30-day demo with $50,000 of virtual capital to learn how leverage and margin behave before risking a rand, no deposit, withdrawal or inactivity fees, and a swap-free account on request. The counterpart: support is 24/5, closed at weekends and mainly in English, and the catalogue is entirely leveraged, so the demo is not optional.

The verdict
The verdict
For a South African trader the case is arithmetic, with one regulatory caveat attached. An active trader on the Raw account pays roughly $8 per round-turn lot against about $13 for the average broker we track, an annual bill 30 to 40% below a mainstream broker running its own platform, with no inactivity fees, free deposits and free withdrawals within 24 hours. That discipline matters because SARS usually taxes CFD and forex profits as ordinary income at your marginal rate, up to 45%: tax takes its share of the upside, so cost is the variable you control. The caveat is the licence: no FSP authorisation from the FSCA under the FAIS Act, service from the CySEC, FCA, ASIC and SCB entities, and support running 24/5 on a UK phone line with no Johannesburg desk. A trader who wants local supervision should weigh Avatrade, FSCA-authorised through Ava Capital Markets (Pty) Ltd, or Vantage, also FSCA-regulated and cheaper to enter at $50; Pepperstone sits above at rank 1 on execution while sharing the same absence of an FSCA licence. Everything here is a derivative, with no JSE shares and no real ownership, so a long-term investor should look at IG or Bitpanda. Within its lane the verdict our ranking reflects stands: rank 2, rated 4.8, priced at the very low end of the comparison, and the account we would point a cost-first South African trader towards after a full-scale rehearsal on the demo. Leveraged trading carries a high risk of loss and most retail accounts lose money.

Frequently asked questions
FAQ Eightcap
Is Eightcap reliable?
Eightcap is an established international broker, regulated since 2009 by CySEC, the FCA (no. 921296) and ASIC (no. 391441), with Eightcap Global Limited in the Bahamas (SCB) for international clients. It holds no FSP licence from the FSCA under the FAIS Act and serves South African residents from those entities, with client money segregated at tier-1 banks. Trustpilot shows 4.0/5 across more than 3,100 reviews. For a locally licensed alternative, Avatrade and Vantage are FSCA-regulated here.
Why choose Eightcap?
For its costs above all: Eightcap ranks 2nd in our South Africa comparison as one of the lowest-cost brokers available here, with Raw spreads from 0.0 pip, gold from 0.1 pip, MT4, MT5 and native TradingView out of the box, and a deep crypto CFD catalogue.
What are the fees at Eightcap?
Raw account: spreads from 0 pip with $3.5 per lot ($7 round turn), roughly $8 per round-turn lot all in. Standard: spreads from 1 pip, commission-free. The minimum deposit is $100, deposits are free, and there are no inactivity or withdrawal fees. Two local cost lines to add: the ZAR-to-USD conversion on funding, since accounts are held in dollars, and tax, as SARS usually treats CFD and forex profits as ordinary income at your marginal rate (up to 45%) rather than as capital gains.
Who is Eightcap for?
Trading profiles: beginners get a $100 entry point and a free 30-day demo with $50,000 of virtual capital; active traders get one of the cheapest grids in our comparison plus MT5, TradingView, the MQL5 API and a free VPS from 5 lots a month. Less suited to the investor who wants direct ownership, better served by IG (real share and ETF dealing, no ETF fees) or Bitpanda (fractional shares and ETFs), and to the resident who requires an FSCA-licensed entity, better served by Avatrade or Vantage.
Is it easy to withdraw from Eightcap?
Yes, withdrawals are free and processed within 24 hours by bank transfer, card, e-wallet or crypto. Accounts are funded in US dollars while you spend in rand, and the ZAR floats freely against the dollar, so the rate can move between funding and withdrawal; check what your own bank charges on the transfer, as Eightcap adds nothing.
