Our synthesis

The verdict of the duel

Eightcap or Avatrade? Both accept South African residents, both run in US dollars while you earn in rand, and both trade derivatives only: no JSE-listed share and no securities account on either side, and at Avatrade that absence explicitly closes the Tax-Free Savings Account route. What separates them locally is the licence. Avatrade holds one directly: Ava Capital Markets (Pty) Ltd is FSCA-authorised under the FAIS Act (no. 45984), one of only two local authorisations in our South Africa ranking. Eightcap has no FSP licence and serves residents from its CySEC, FCA, ASIC and SCB entities, so leverage ceilings and negative balance terms are set per entity. Cost runs the other way. Eightcap's Raw account starts at 0.0 pip on EUR/USD with a $3.5 per-lot commission, $7 the round turn, gold from 0.1 pip, no inactivity fee. Avatrade charges no commission but prices a fixed 0.9 pip on EUR/USD, and adds roughly $50 a quarter if the account sits idle. Both ask $100 to open and both leave you exposed to a floating rand, but the conversion charge is not shared. Eightcap takes nothing on deposits, so what you pay is your own bank's transfer fee and any FX on funding a dollar account, between 0.5% and 1% depending on the method. Avatrade adds around 0.5% of its own when you fund outside the account base currency, on top of that same bank fee. SARS usually treats margin profits as ordinary income at your marginal rate, up to 45%, not under the R40,000 exclusion and 40% inclusion regime. Both score 4.8, Eightcap second in our comparison and Avatrade third. On editorial preference we lean Eightcap on running cost; Avatrade is the pick for a resident who wants recourse that stays inside the country.

Choose Eightcap

you trade often enough for the Raw grid to pay off, three to five lots a month on the majors: MT4, MT5 and native TradingView with Expert Advisors and the MQL5 API, free withdrawals within 24 hours, and a 30-day demo with $50,000. The trade-off: 24/5 support, no Johannesburg desk.

Choose Avatrade

you are opening a first leveraged account and want a locally supervised entity rather than one in Cyprus or the Bahamas: fixed spreads set before you click, an unlimited $100,000 demo with the Avatrade Academy, AvaProtect, and copy trading through both AvaSocial and DupliTrade, which puts Avatrade first in our South Africa copy-trading comparator.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions about Eightcap and Avatrade

Is Eightcap reliable?

Eightcap is an established international broker, regulated since 2009 by CySEC, the FCA (no. 921296) and ASIC (no. 391441), with Eightcap Global Limited in the Bahamas (SCB) for international clients. It holds no FSP licence from the FSCA under the FAIS Act and serves South African residents from those entities, with client money segregated at tier-1 banks. Trustpilot shows 4.0/5 across more than 3,100 reviews. For a locally licensed alternative, Avatrade and Vantage are FSCA-regulated here.

Why choose Eightcap?

For its costs above all: Eightcap ranks 2nd in our South Africa comparison as one of the lowest-cost brokers available here, with Raw spreads from 0.0 pip, gold from 0.1 pip, MT4, MT5 and native TradingView out of the box, and a deep crypto CFD catalogue.

What are the fees at Eightcap?

Raw account: spreads from 0 pip with $3.5 per lot ($7 round turn), roughly $8 per round-turn lot all in. Standard: spreads from 1 pip, commission-free. The minimum deposit is $100, deposits are free, and there are no inactivity or withdrawal fees. Two local cost lines to add: the ZAR-to-USD conversion on funding, since accounts are held in dollars, and tax, as SARS usually treats CFD and forex profits as ordinary income at your marginal rate (up to 45%) rather than as capital gains.

Who is Eightcap for?

Trading profiles: beginners get a $100 entry point and a free 30-day demo with $50,000 of virtual capital; active traders get one of the cheapest grids in our comparison plus MT5, TradingView, the MQL5 API and a free VPS from 5 lots a month. Less suited to the investor who wants direct ownership, better served by IG (real share and ETF dealing, no ETF fees) or Bitpanda (fractional shares and ETFs), and to the resident who requires an FSCA-licensed entity, better served by Avatrade or Vantage.

Is it easy to withdraw from Eightcap?

Yes, withdrawals are free and processed within 24 hours by bank transfer, card, e-wallet or crypto. Accounts are funded in US dollars while you spend in rand, and the ZAR floats freely against the dollar, so the rate can move between funding and withdrawal; check what your own bank charges on the transfer, as Eightcap adds nothing.

Is Avatrade reliable?

Yes. AvaTrade is one of only two brokers in our South Africa comparison with a local licence: Ava Capital Markets (Pty) Ltd is FSCA-authorised as a Financial Services Provider under the FAIS Act (no. 45984). The group has operated since 2006 across nine jurisdictions, including the Central Bank of Ireland (ref. C53877), ASIC (AFSL 406684), the Japanese FSA (no. 1662) and the FSRA in the ADGM (no. 190018), with client money in segregated accounts. Trustpilot shows 4.8/5 across more than 12,500 reviews. Leverage caps differ by entity, so check which company your account is opened with.

Why choose Avatrade?

For the combination a South African beginner needs: a local FSCA authorisation, fixed spreads known before you click, an unlimited demo, the AvaTrade Academy, and copy trading through both AvaSocial and DupliTrade, which ranks AvaTrade first in our South Africa copy-trading comparator. It sits third of seven at 4.8/5 in our broker comparator, behind Pepperstone on execution and Eightcap on cost.

What are the fees at Avatrade?

There is no commission. Pricing runs on fixed spreads, from 0.9 pip on EUR/USD on the Standard account (0.6 pip on Professional) and from 0.13% on share derivatives. Deposits and withdrawals are free and the entry deposit is $100. Budget two extras as a rand-based client: around 0.5% conversion when you fund outside the account base currency, and roughly $50 a quarter if the account sits idle.

Who is Avatrade for?

Beginners first. The unlimited demo, the Academy, fixed costs, AvaProtect and the local FSCA licence are why we badge it for beginners, while active traders get MT4, MT5, automation and FX options. It is the wrong fit for a long-term rand-based investor: everything is a derivative, so there is no securities account, no tax wrapper, no TFSA route and no JSE-listed share to own.

Is it easy to withdraw from Avatrade?

Yes, withdrawals are free and processed within 1-2 business days by bank transfer, card or e-wallet. Accounts are funded in US dollars while you earn in rand, and the rand floats freely against the dollar, so the rate you withdraw at will differ from the rate you funded at, with your bank's transfer charge on top.
