Should you buy Onyxcoin?
A Layer-3 network built on Arbitrum Orbit that settles to Base, with XCN used for gas, staking and governance. In South Africa both gains and staking rewards are taxable. Here is our rating, the honest trade-offs, and how to buy it.
Key points
- XCN: the native token of Onyx, a Layer-3 network settling to Base and inheriting Ethereum's security.
- Used for gas fees, smart-contract execution, staking and governance through the Onyx DAO.
- Still trades about 98% below its May 2022 all-time high, and it is small-cap and thinly traded: check the listing and the volume on your platform first.
- SARS taxes gains: after the annual R40,000 exclusion, 40% of a net gain is included in taxable income at your marginal rate (up to 45%), an effective maximum near 18%.
- Staking rewards differ: SARS generally treats them as income on receipt, with capital gains tax due on any later disposal.
- The FSCA declared crypto assets a financial product under the FAIS Act in October 2022, so Crypto Asset Service Providers need an FSP licence.
- XCN is quoted in US dollars while you spend in rand: the ZAR floats, so currency moves and ZAR-to-USD conversion fees both count.
01Our review
Onyxcoin at a glance
Onyxcoin is the native token of Onyx, a Layer-3 blockchain built on Arbitrum Orbit's rollup technology. Using Arbitrum's AnyTrust data availability model, Onyx settles to Base (an Ethereum Layer-2), which means it inherits Ethereum's security guarantees while aiming for lower fees and higher throughput than settling directly on Ethereum. The network is fully EVM-compatible, so developers can deploy existing Solidity smart contracts without modification. XCN itself has three jobs: paying gas fees, staking to help secure the network, and voting on protocol decisions through the Onyx DAO. The investment case rests on Onyx growing into a used piece of rollup infrastructure, not on cash flow, which the token does not generate. XCN remains a small-cap, thinly-traded altcoin that still sits close to 98% below its 2022 peak.
Strengths
- Inherits Ethereum's security via settlement on Base, while using Arbitrum Orbit's rollup technology for scalability.
- Full EVM compatibility: existing Solidity contracts and tooling work without modification.
- Three concrete token utilities: gas payments, staking, and on-chain governance through the Onyx DAO.
- High upside asymmetry given the token trades far below its all-time high, for investors comfortable with that risk.
Watch-outs
- Trades roughly 98% below its May 2022 all-time high of $0.1841, even after a positive year.
- Modest liquidity and market capitalisation versus large-cap infrastructure tokens, meaning larger price swings on smaller volumes.
- No cash flow to the token: governance rights do not automatically translate into a share of network revenue.
- Competitive Layer-3/rollup landscape, with several rival scaling networks targeting similar developer demand.

04Our verdict
Our verdict, in plain terms
High-risk infrastructure bet
Onyxcoin sits on real rollup infrastructure with a working technical design, but it remains a small-cap, thinly-traded token that is still far below its 2022 peak. Reasonable only as a very small, high-risk satellite position on a secure, regulated platform; not a core holding.
This is analysis, not advice. The case for: Onyx is built on established rollup technology (Arbitrum Orbit), settles to Base for Ethereum-grade security, and is fully EVM-compatible, which lowers the barrier for developers to build on it. XCN's utility spans gas, staking and governance, which is a coherent design for a Layer-3 network token.
The case against: the token remains a small-cap asset that still trades close to 98% below its May 2022 all-time high, and liquidity is modest next to large-cap Layer-1 and Layer-2 tokens. Governance rights do not equal a claim on network revenue, and Onyx competes with several other rollup and scaling networks chasing the same developer demand.
We rate it a small-cap infrastructure bet with real technical substance but meaningfully weaker adoption, liquidity and momentum than the crypto majors. As always, no invented price target: crypto forecasts are guesswork, and we won't dress one up as analysis.

How to buy Onyxcoin from South Africa
Two routes, both through regulated platforms; the comparison is below.
Cash / spot
Buy the real token (spot)
You own the actual XCN, held in the platform's custody or your own wallet. In our South Africa crypto comparison, Nexo ranks first: interest on deposits, flexible staking and a card, though it is custodial and earning yield there is closer to lending your crypto than to plain ownership. Uphold carries 250+ cryptocurrencies with insured custody and a spread-based model (deposit fees from around 1.49%). Binance lists the widest catalogue at spot fees from around 0.1% but sits outside that comparison, and it reaches this market internationally as a registered Digital Asset Service Provider, which is not a South African licence. On a token this small, check the listing, the traded volume and the XCN withdrawal fee before you deposit, and consider self-custody for larger amounts.
CFD (leveraged)
Trade via CFD (leverage)
A CFD tracks the price without you owning any XCN, with leverage that amplifies gains and losses. Costs are the spread plus overnight financing. Eightcap runs 400+ crypto CFD markets and IG offers crypto exposure through derivatives with a Johannesburg presence, but altcoin coverage is far thinner than for Bitcoin or Ethereum, so a token like XCN may simply not be quoted. Short-term, risk-aware traders only: most retail CFD accounts lose money.
For most people in South Africa, buying the real token on a regulated platform and sizing it very small is the sensible route, given how volatile and niche this asset is. Compare platforms on fees, custody and security below.

6 practical tips for buying Onyxcoin in South Africa
-
Size it very small
Treat XCN as a small, high-risk satellite position, never money you need soon.
-
Check the platform's status
Confirm whether your platform holds an FSCA FSP licence or serves South Africa under an international licence.
-
Confirm XCN is listed
On a small-cap token, check the listing, its traded volume and the withdrawal fee before committing.
-
Count the rand conversion
Accounts are usually funded in USD, so ZAR-to-USD conversion and withdrawal fees sit on top of the spread.
-
Separate staking from ownership
Protocol staking secures the Onyx network; a platform 'earn' product lends your crypto instead and adds counterparty risk.
-
Keep records for SARS
Export a CSV of every buy, sell and reward: disposals go on your annual return, rewards count as income on receipt.

- It can be a small, speculative satellite position for an investor who already understands crypto and Layer-3 infrastructure risk, given XCN's utility in gas, staking and governance. It has no cash flow, modest liquidity, and still trades roughly 98% below its May 2022 peak, so it is unsuitable as a core holding or a first crypto purchase.
- Two different treatments. On a gain, if you hold XCN as an investor, capital gains tax applies: after the annual R40,000 exclusion, 40% of your net gain is included in your taxable income at your marginal rate. Because the top marginal rate is 45%, the effective maximum CGT rate is about 18%, and lower marginal rates give a lower effective rate. If SARS regards you as an active or frequent trader, profits can instead be taxed as ordinary income. Staking rewards are treated as income when you receive them, taxed at your marginal rate, with CGT due on any later disposal of the tokens you were paid. This is not tax advice; consult a registered SARS tax practitioner.
- Yes, and the framework applies to the platform, not to any individual token. In October 2022 the FSCA (Financial Sector Conduct Authority) declared crypto assets a financial product under the FAIS Act, and Crypto Asset Service Providers must hold an FSP licence from the FSCA. Nexo, Uphold, Eightcap and IG serve South African residents under global licences (FCA, CySEC, ASIC, FinCEN, BaFin), and Binance reaches this market internationally as a registered Digital Asset Service Provider, which is not a South African licence. No regulator endorses a token: check which authority stands behind your platform before depositing.
- Yes. XCN is quoted in US dollars and accounts are usually funded in USD, while the rand floats rather than being pegged. That leaves two moving parts, the XCN price and the ZAR/USD rate, plus a conversion fee on each deposit and withdrawal.
