The UAE investor who wants real stocks, ETFs and crypto with copy trading in one USD account

Our take

My take on eToro

eToro tops our UAE broker ranking, and it holds the first spot in our UAE crypto and copy-trading comparisons as well, which is unusual for a single platform. The reason is scope: from one USD-denominated account, a resident of Dubai or Abu Dhabi gets real ownership of 7,000+ stocks and 900+ ETFs, more than 130 cryptocurrencies held directly rather than as derivatives, and the CopyTrader system that made eToro the pioneer of social trading back in 2007. Cited by Forbes among the leading platforms and used by more than 30 million people, the company has been NASDAQ-listed since 2025.

One thing should be said plainly, because it is the first question a careful UAE investor asks: eToro holds no standalone local licence from the SCA, the DFSA in Dubai's DIFC or the FSRA in Abu Dhabi's ADGM. It serves UAE residents under its international tier-1 licences, CySEC in Cyprus (held since 2010), the FCA in the United Kingdom and ASIC in Australia, with client funds segregated and Lloyd's insurance up to $1M per client on top. Accounts are funded in US dollars, which is how most brokers quote in the Emirates anyway, and the entry ticket stays low: $50 minimum deposit, fractional shares, and a $100,000 demo to rehearse everything first. For the UAE investor who wants breadth and simplicity over a local stamp, this is where our comparison starts.

“For a UAE investor, eToro bundles what usually takes three accounts: real stocks and ETFs, crypto held directly, and the investors you copy, in one dollar account that matches how the Emirates already fund their brokers. ”

Safety & regulation

Is your money safe?

The UAE splits financial supervision across several authorities: the SCA regulates onshore activity at federal level, the DFSA oversees Dubai's DIFC free zone, the FSRA oversees the ADGM in Abu Dhabi, and virtual assets in Dubai answer to VARA. eToro holds none of these licences. Like most international platforms serving the Emirates, it takes UAE clients under its licences held abroad: eToro (Europe) Ltd is regulated by Cyprus's CySEC, a licence held since 2010, and the wider group also answers to the FCA in the UK and ASIC in Australia. That is a different status from Pepperstone, which runs a DFSA-regulated entity in the DIFC, or AvaTrade, regulated by the FSRA in the ADGM; if a locally supervised entity is your hard requirement, those two are the alternatives to weigh. What eToro offers instead is depth of protection within its international framework. Client money is held in segregated accounts, with Lloyd's insurance adding cover of up to one million dollars per client, protection few competitors in our UAE ranking can point to. The group has also been listed on NASDAQ since May 2025, so its accounts face public-market scrutiny in addition to regulatory oversight, and the crypto side of the EU business runs under a MiCA licence secured in early 2025. On the UAE side, crypto is a legal, regulated asset class, and eToro's holdings are custodial until you withdraw them to the platform's own wallet. Two-factor authentication switches on in seconds, and a Trustpilot rating of about 4.2/5 built on more than 30,000 reviews gives the platform one of the largest verified review bases of any broker we cover. One practical note: protections such as leverage caps and negative balance protection are set by the entity your account is opened with (the 1:30 retail cap on derivatives comes from the ESMA rulebook that governs the EU entity), so check your onboarding paperwork before you fund.

For once, the dollar-denominated account is not a drawback. UAE brokerage accounts are typically funded in US dollars, and the dirham's peg at roughly 3.6725 to the dollar keeps the AED-to-USD conversion stable and predictable, so the two costs to plan around are eToro's 1.5% currency conversion when you move in or out of another currency and whatever your AED bank charges to send the transfer. Fund in dollars, trade and hold in dollars, and the 1.5% conversion simply never triggers: it only applies when money moves in or out of another currency, a line most UAE residents can sidestep entirely.

The trading grid itself holds few surprises for a reader used to USD pricing. Buying a stock has cost a flat $1 per order since 2025, ETFs carry no purchase commission, and fractional shares let a Dubai saver start with a handful of dollars rather than a full share. Derivatives and crypto trade on spreads, 0.15% on stock derivatives and up to 1% on crypto, which is the grid's weak point if coins are your main interest. Withdrawals from the USD account cost a flat $5, deposits are free, and the $10 monthly inactivity fee waits for twelve full months without a login before it bites, a threshold a portfolio you glance at even quarterly will never cross. Idle cash, meanwhile, earns interest of up to around 3% while it waits to be deployed.

Then comes the part of the cost picture where the Emirates rewrites the maths: tax. The UAE levies no personal income tax and no capital gains tax on resident individuals, so gains on stocks, ETFs or crypto held with eToro are generally tax-free for a UAE tax resident, and the interest on your uninvested cash is not clipped either. The 9% federal corporate tax applies to business profits above AED 375,000, not to an individual's personal account. This is not tax advice, and non-residents may still owe tax in their home country. For a long-term portfolio, zero tax drag on top of commission-free ETFs is a combination that compounds quietly in your favour.

The range is wide and, more usefully for a UAE reader, most of it is real ownership rather than derivatives. You get 7,000+ stocks and 900+ ETFs you actually own, more than 130 cryptocurrencies held directly, 65 currency pairs, plus commodity and index derivatives for shorter-term plays. That direct-ownership model is worth underlining in the Emirates, where several of the biggest names in our UAE comparison, Pepperstone and Eightcap among them, deal exclusively in derivatives: on eToro, the shares, ETFs and coins are yours, and the crypto can be moved out to the platform's own wallet if you want to take custody yourself.

Crypto deserves its own word here, because the UAE is one of the few markets where virtual assets are squarely legal and regulated, overseen by VARA in Dubai, the SCA federally and the FSRA in the ADGM. eToro is the platform we rank first for buying crypto from the UAE: real Bitcoin, Ethereum and the main altcoins sit in the same balance as your stocks and ETFs, and the social feed and CopyTrader work across all of it. eToro itself serves UAE residents under its international licences rather than a VARA authorisation, a status worth knowing even if it changes little day to day, and the usual rule applies to anything left on a custodial platform: not your keys, not your coins.

What no rival in our UAE comparison matches is the social layer. CopyTrader mirrors the portfolios of experienced investors automatically, with filters for track record and risk score, while the 100+ Smart Portfolios package entire themes, AI, energy and others, into a single position. Everything sits inside the same USD securities account, and the $100,000 demo lets a UAE investor rehearse the whole setup, copying included, without funding anything yet.

Who this broker is for

Who this broker is for

  1. First-time investor in the UAE

A $50 minimum deposit, fractional shares, an interface with no jargon and a $100,000 demo make the first portfolio approachable, and with no personal capital gains tax for UAE residents, what you earn is generally yours to keep. The main trade-off to accept: supervision comes from CySEC, the FCA and ASIC, not from a UAE authority.

  2. Social investor

CopyTrader and the 100+ Smart Portfolios are the reason eToro also tops our UAE copy-trading ranking: replicate experienced investors in one click, filter them by performance and risk score, and start from $50.

  3. UAE resident building crypto exposure

First in our UAE crypto ranking: 130+ coins held directly rather than via derivatives, in the same USD account as your stocks and ETFs, with eToro's own wallet available for moving coins out. The UAE treats virtual assets as legal and regulated (VARA, SCA, FSRA), and gains are generally tax-free for residents; the 1% crypto spread is the cost to weigh.

The verdict

The verdict

For a UAE investor the case is straightforward, which is why eToro sits first in our UAE ranking. No other platform in our comparison puts real stocks, commission-free ETFs, 130+ directly held cryptocurrencies and copy trading in one place, and the account's dollar denomination, often a drawback in Europe, is close to neutral here: UAE accounts are funded in dollars anyway, and the dirham's peg keeps the conversion predictable. Add the UAE's zero personal tax on capital gains and the commission-free ETF grid compounds untouched, with interest on idle cash as a bonus. The limits are equally clear. eToro holds no SCA, DFSA, FSRA or VARA licence and serves UAE residents from its CySEC, FCA and ASIC entities, so the trader who wants a locally supervised broker should look at Pepperstone, DFSA-regulated in Dubai's DIFC, or AvaTrade, FSRA-regulated in Abu Dhabi's ADGM. Crypto spreads up to 1% argue against it for high-frequency coin trading, and the advanced-trader toolkit is thinner than at execution specialists. But those are edges, not the core. The 9.6/10 reflects what the platform actually is: the most complete and most approachable way for a resident of Dubai or Abu Dhabi to build a first, or a broad, portfolio, behind segregated accounts, Lloyd's insurance up to $1M per client and a Trustpilot base of more than 30,000 reviews at about 4.2/5. It is the account we would point a UAE beginner to first.

Frequently asked questions

FAQ eToro

Is eToro reliable?

Yes, within its framework. eToro serves UAE residents under international tier-1 licences, CySEC in Cyprus (since 2010), the FCA in the UK and ASIC in Australia, rather than a standalone SCA, DFSA, FSRA or VARA authorisation. Client funds are segregated, Lloyd's insurance covers up to $1M per client, the company has been NASDAQ-listed since 2025, and Trustpilot shows about 4.2/5 across more than 30,000 reviews.

Why choose eToro?

Because it tops our UAE ranking on breadth: real ownership of 7,000+ stocks, 900+ commission-free ETFs and 130+ cryptocurrencies held directly, plus CopyTrader and Smart Portfolios, all in one USD account. For a UAE resident that dollar denomination is close to neutral, since local brokerage accounts are typically funded in USD and the dirham's peg keeps the conversion stable.

What are the fees at eToro?

Stock orders run $1 each, ETF purchases are commission-free, and derivatives and crypto trade on spreads (0.15% on stock derivatives, up to 1% on crypto). Currency conversion costs 1.5% and a USD withdrawal is a flat $5. For a UAE resident individual the bigger picture is favourable: no personal capital gains tax applies, so gains are generally tax-free; the 9% corporate tax only concerns business profits above AED 375,000. Non-residents may owe tax in their home country.

Who is eToro for?

The UAE investor who wants one account for everything: beginners get fractional shares, a $50 entry ticket and the $100,000 demo; crypto buyers get direct ownership of 130+ coins in a market where virtual assets are legal and regulated; and anyone can learn by copying seasoned investors. Only the trader who insists on a locally licensed broker, such as Pepperstone (DFSA) or AvaTrade (FSRA), or who needs advanced execution tools, should look elsewhere.

Is it easy to withdraw from eToro?

Withdrawals go through at any time, a flat $5 from the USD account. Funding from the UAE is typically in US dollars, and the dirham's peg at roughly 3.6725 to the dollar keeps the conversion predictable; the line worth checking is what your own AED bank charges on the transfer, plus eToro's 1.5% fee if you convert in or out of another currency.
