Our take

My take on FP Markets

FP Markets, run by First Prudential Markets Pty Ltd, is a multi-asset CFD broker founded in 2005 in Sydney. It pairs a very deep catalogue, more than 10,000 instruments across forex, stock, index, commodity, ETF, bond and crypto CFDs, with three platforms: MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5 and Iress.

For a Canadian trader the draw is the combination of tight Raw-account pricing and sheer breadth, backed by an excellent Trustpilot standing. The trade-off is regulation. FP Markets operates through ASIC, CySEC, FSCA and FSA St. Vincent entities and is not registered with CIRO, Canada's investment regulator, so accounts sit outside CIPF investor protection.

Safety & regulation

Is your money safe?

FP Markets operates through entities regulated by ASIC in Australia, CySEC in Cyprus, the FSCA in South Africa and the FSA of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Client funds are segregated as required by the relevant regulator, and negative balance protection applies under the applicable retail framework. For investors in Canada the structure matters. None of these regulators is CIRO, the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization, and none is overseen by the provincial securities commissions that make up the CSA. Accounts are not covered by CIPF. FP Markets serves Canadian clients cross-border, so the level of recourse is lower than with a locally registered broker.

Fees & spreads

What does it really cost?

FP Markets runs two pricing models. The Standard account charges no commission, with spreads from 1.0 pip. The Raw account tightens spreads to 0.0 pip against a commission of about $3 USD per lot. Stock and ETF CFDs carry a commission from about 0.08%. Deposits are free and most withdrawals are free on cards and e-wallets, though wire transfers cost about $10 to $20 and the Iress platform costs about $70/month unless waived by trading volume.

For a Canadian resident, gains realised on a CFD account are generally taxable and you must declare them to the CRA yourself, since an offshore broker does not withhold Canadian tax. This is not tax advice.

Instruments & markets covered

Instruments & markets covered

FP Markets offers more than 10,000 instruments across forex (60+ pairs), stock, index, commodity, ETF, bond and crypto CFDs, on MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5 and Iress, with leverage up to 1:500 for eligible clients and a free unlimited demo. The crypto range is limited to a handful of coins, all as CFDs.

It is important to understand that you are not buying real shares or ETFs here, only CFDs that track their price with leverage. This is a broker built for short-term, leveraged trading, not for building a long-term portfolio of directly held securities inside a registered account.

The verdict

The verdict

FP Markets is a strong multi-asset CFD broker: tight Raw pricing, a very deep catalogue, three solid platforms and an excellent Trustpilot standing. It is one of the more complete CFD offerings around, which is reflected in our score.

We list it as a reference rather than a HelloBrokers partner, so there is no affiliate link here. The point that weighs most in our assessment is regulation: FP Markets holds only offshore and international licences, is not registered with CIRO and offers no CIPF protection or registered accounts. If your priority is the safety of a Canada-regulated broker, a CIRO member is a better fit. FP Markets suits a trader who understands leveraged CFDs and accepts an offshore frame in exchange for pricing and breadth.
