StarTrader: cFD broker with a low entry point and MetaTrader platforms? My 2026 review
A low-cost CFD broker on MT4 and MT5 with tight ECN pricing, but only an offshore Seychelles licence rather than CIRO registration in Canada.
Our take
My take on StarTrader
StarTrader is a CFD broker launched in 2016 and operating out of the Seychelles. It pairs a low $50 entry point with the MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5 platforms, and covers forex, stock, index, commodity, ETF and crypto CFDs, all as leveraged derivatives rather than assets you own.
For a Canadian trader the appeal is the pricing: an ECN account with spreads from 0.0 pips and a flat $3 commission per lot, plus copy trading and an unlimited demo. The trade-off is the regulatory frame. StarTrader is licensed by the Financial Services Authority of the Seychelles, an offshore regulator, and is not registered with CIRO, Canada's investment regulator, so accounts sit outside CIPF investor protection.
Why trust HelloBrokers?
This review is not a copy-paste of StarTrader's marketing page. We tested the platforms, modelled the cost of a typical trade down to the pip, and benchmarked StarTrader against the 4 brokers in our comparison. A broker is judged on verifiable figures, not marketing promises.

Safety & regulation
Is your money safe?
StarTrader operates through entities licensed by the Financial Services Authority (FSA) of the Seychelles. Client funds are held in segregated accounts as required by that regulator, and the broker advertises negative balance protection. For investors in Canada the structure matters. The FSA of the Seychelles is an offshore regulator, not CIRO, the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization, and StarTrader is not overseen by the provincial securities commissions that make up the CSA. Accounts are not covered by CIPF, the protection that applies if a CIRO member firm becomes insolvent. StarTrader serves Canadian clients cross-border, so the level of recourse is lower than with a locally registered broker.

Fees & spreads
What does it really cost?
StarTrader runs two pricing models. The Standard account charges no commission, with spreads from 1.3 pips on EUR/USD. The ECN account flips the logic: spreads from 0.0 pips against a flat $3 commission per lot traded. The broker advertises no deposit or inactivity fee, though payment-provider and currency-conversion charges can apply depending on how you fund and withdraw.
For a Canadian resident, gains realised on a CFD account are generally taxable and you must declare them to the CRA yourself, since an offshore broker does not withhold Canadian tax. This is not tax advice.
Instruments & markets covered
Instruments & markets covered
StarTrader offers more than 200 instruments across forex (50+ pairs), stock, index, commodity, ETF and crypto CFDs, traded on MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5 with copy trading. Leverage runs up to 1:500 on forex and 1:200 on indices and commodities, with lower caps on other classes.
It is important to understand that you are not buying real shares or ETFs here, only CFDs that track their price with leverage. This is a broker built for short-term, leveraged trading, not for building a long-term portfolio of directly held securities inside a registered account.

The verdict
StarTrader delivers competitive ECN pricing, MetaTrader platforms and copy trading at a low entry point, which is why we list it as a HelloBrokers partner for active CFD traders in Canada. Its Trustpilot standing is solid.
The point that weighs most in our assessment is regulation: StarTrader holds only an offshore Seychelles licence, is not registered with CIRO and offers no CIPF protection or registered accounts. If your priority is the safety of a Canada-regulated broker, a CIRO member is a better fit. StarTrader suits a trader who understands leveraged CFDs and accepts an offshore frame in exchange for tight pricing.
